Malaysia Airlines loses contact with plane carrying 239 people

Malaysia Airlines says it has lost contact with a plane with 239 aboard enroute from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

The airline said in a statement early Saturday it was attempting to locate the Boeing 777 after it lost contact with Subang Air Traffic Control at 2:40 a.m. It was scheduled to land in Beijing at 6:30 a.m.

China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported the plane was lost in airspace controlled by Vietnam, and did not make contact with Chinese air traffic controllers.

The plane is carrying 227 passengers, including two infants, and 12 crew members. The airline said it is working with authorities to locate the plane.

Boeing said on its Twitter account it is monitoring the situation, and "our thoughts are with everyone on board."

NBC News is reporting that the programmed change in direction took place at least 12 minutes before the co-pilot signed off over the radio.

To be fair, it also mentions in the article that some pilots will program an alternate flight plan in case of emergency. Still lots of questions.

I read that too, and I'm just not buying it. Just how common is that? That seems like a whole lot of wasted time to program a route that you are 99.9999% not going to use for every single flight. Do some pilots do that, and then brag about that practice to other pilots? Sure, probably there are a few crazy people who do that. But not Malaysian pilots.

Couple new details. Some data on the pilot's flight sim was deleted, they are trying to recover whatever that is. Also, they have rejected the reported "sighting" in the Maldives, apparently there was military radar in that area.

I can see that, but not so far into the flight. You'd program it either prior to or just after takeoff

If they do ever find the black boxes, one problem they'll have with the cockpit voice recorder is that it only records the final 2 hours. It automatically records over anything older than that. Hopefully the flight data part of the black box will tell us if it was a freak accident or if its a hijack or suicide because the voice recorder may have not much more than silence.

ABC News is reporting that US and British investigators have been able to get more information from satellite pings and believe the plane took one of two possible flight paths south. They have dramatically narrowed down the search to an area the size of Arizona.

No one else is reporting it yet, a few places have re-reported it crediting ABC News.

CNN is reporting Malaysia has asked India to search a specific area in that country.

Guess what, I dont care what happened to this flight, smells like bullshit to me but I'm not going to fritter away my every hour like so much of the world over it.

If it was a standard hijacking the ransom demands would've arrived by now, if it crashed it would've been found by now... strange indeed but to hell with it, basically feels like a big distraction at this point.
