I think we gotta bring back Eric Berry, whether it's a contract, or a tag. DJ needs to be back as well on an obviously short term contract. He's 33, but he's still playing at a high level. I think Sean Smith is expendable. I'd prefer we let him go, then try to fill the #2 CB spot with another FA (Peters would be #1)
Here's a few FA CB's to consider Janoris Jenkins Prince Amukamara Casey Hayward Trumaine Johnson Brandon Boykin Leon Hall But keep in mind, Philip Gaines was really starting to look solid before his injury. I think he's a true #3 who can even start if needed. And on the other side of the ball I'd prefer them to draft a #2 WR instead of signing a FA As for Hali, Daniel, Devito, it's probably time for them to go. Then I think the team has to choose between Abdullah or Branch on which one to keep. I'd prefer Abdullah. The rest of our FA's I don't really care what happens. Zombo, Stephenson, Fleming, Moses are all replaceable. |

**** Allen and Stephenson they aren't that good to fret about if they want big bucks. We have to focus on keeping this D together and to go with that depending on who's there I'd throw a 1st round pick at it too. Draft to our strength so it remains a strength.

Smith is league average? Sean Smith?
I wonder if people actually watch the games sometimes...There is no way he's not here next year. With him and Peters we have 2 legit #1 CB's. And we get Gaines back. |

Stephenson and Fleming can go. They're not good. I like Allen but the guy can't stay healthy. Why pay a injury prone player?

Daniel, Stephenson, Moses, and Fleming can all go kick rocks. We have to have DJ and Berry back, end of discussion. I'd like to retain DeVito, Hali, and Abullah if we can. While Allen is an above average guard, his injuries over the last seasons have made me a little leery of signing him to a fat contract. Smith and Howard are gone, everybody else is just meh.

Some clown will pay Howard way too much (I like him, but he benefits a ton playing along side some of our other guys).

He takes too many plays off. Goes for the interception instead of breaking up the pass. He showboats on simple plays. Gets himself suspended for selfish reasons.

1st things first. That 31m number should be what we have to spend on free agents after our rookie pool is already taken into consideration. Here's how.
1) We have 121m already spoken for in cap dollars for 2016 and the cap will be 153m (if it rises by the same number it has the last 2 years under this CBA, as expected) 2) We also have roughly 4m to rollover from this year to next...bringing that adjusted spending down to around 117m out of 153m. 3) the rookie Pool will be 4-5m, unless we trade someone for an additional pick...bringing that 117m back up to around 122m...which brings the overall cap space we will have available should be damn close to 31m. Jaye Howard is as good as gone unless free agency doesn't give him the types of offers he expects to get. He is saying he wants paid like one of the top DL in football and Mike Daniels just got a 4yr, 42m dollar extension. Eric Berry deserves to be paid as the top safety in the NFL and as it sits right now, that means he deserves 10m per year. Can't let this guy go. Period. Give him a nice signing bonus to keep the first year cap hit minimal. Sean Smith deserves to get paid as a top 10 CB IMO...but who knows if he wants to stay or to go get a little more money in FA in a stacked crop of free agent CBs including Leon Hall, Janoris Jenkins (who would be flat out nasty in this defense) Jerraud Powers, Morris Claiborne, Prince Amukamara, Tarell Brown, among many other quality guys...all younger than him. He's probably gonna be worth 9-10m for each of the next 2 years, but who knows if he would want to take a 4 year deal that averages 8, but that includes a decent signing bonus and basically guaranteeing the next 2 years salary. I think it would be smart of him to stay in KC, but who knows what Dorsey has in store here. He just drafted a first round stud CB and 2 other CBs in the third round in recent drafts. Dorsey might not think he needs to keep Smith and he may be right...but that's one hell of a big gamble. Next is Derrick Johnson. Stud. Rare. Homegrown superhero. But old. If he wants to finish his career in KC, I'd give him a deal similar to his last deal, but shorter. Like 2yrs/10m. Half guaranteed. Maybe make it a longer deal to spread the cap hit. Next up Jeff Allen. He seems to solidify the OL when he is healthy...trouble is its hard to count on him when he misses so much time. Upside is he's versatile and effective at multiple positions. If we pay him as a top 10rg he deserves 3m per...top 10 lg gets about 4. Let's meet in the middle and sign him 3yrs/10m 3m guaranteed in a signing bonus. Next up us nickel safety and they will need to re-sign either Branch or Abdullah. Doesn't matter who, IMO. Whoever is cheapest. Branch is a year younger and is a better physical specimen. Maybe 2 years 5m. Last, but not least, is Mike Devito. This guy is as solid as them come and wants to be here and took pennies last year. I bet he would sign for a 2/4 deal to stay. Seriously, he loves it in KC. I'm not worried about the rest of the list as they are all easily replaceable. So... 10 Berry 8 Smith 5 DJ 3 Allen 3 Abdullah or Branch 2 Devito That's 31m right there, if we structure the deals as evenly dispersed...but Dorsey tends to give players signing bonus in lieu of first year salaries to spread the hit and that lowers the first year cap hit. I can easily see him giving bigger signing bonuses to Berry and Smith and give them a combined 4m first year cap hit...leaving us with 14m to go shopping with. Seriously...I bet this is damn close to exactly what they do in FA...within the building. I'll take a look around the available free agents we might look at and post my thoughts... |

Free agency is what makes drafting well so important. Dorsey has been pretty good thus far. Sure he has missed on some, everyone does, but he has drafted some big time playmakers and just as importantly has done a great job with UDFA's and post-cut pickups.
When your GM does a good job at those things, you put yourself in a position to not desperately over pay for a guy when they decide they want to get paid. I'd like to see them keep all of these guys, but that's of course not going to happen. They seem to value cornerbacks heavily, so I won't be shocked if Smith is the surprise returning player, at a pretty penny. They could sign him to a deal where he leaves when Peters is due. Of course, they drafted Gaines and Nelson for a reason, too. Can't see Berry, DJ, or Hali going anywhere. They'll be back. Howard is probably gone. We still have Poe, Bailey and the guys they have been grooming behind them. We're in a great position to draft a replacement as well if they can't get him back. The Derek Wolfe contract would probably be what it takes to get him back. (36 mil/4 years) I think DeVito will be back if the team wants him. Money isn't a big deal to the guy, and I like that. He brings a great attitude. Also, he really was dominant against the run again this year while also bringing 3 sacks for a career high. A lot of question marks, but again if Dorsey continues to do well in the draft/UDFA/cut period, we will still be okay. |
