Sean Smith is very good.
But he's also aging and corners don't age gracefully. Unless they can agree on a deal where the Chiefs can get out after 2 years with relative ease, they need to move on. I think he's incredibly important to this defense and since Sutton doesn't have a Plan B, having a guy that's able to play a plus press-man is vital. If we're forced to replace him with a guy Fleming's caliber, this defense may well fall apart. If I thought we had a DC who could deal with an average #2 CB better then I'd be less concerned about Smith. As it is, though, I think you have to consider bringing him back. In the end, I think I'd pass but I'm not going to whistle past the graveyard and pretend like it couldn't very well end up detonating the season if we don't do an adequate job replacing him. And I won't pretend like replacing him will be easy.

Not sure why so many are acting as if Smith is expendable. |

I think Berry, Johnson and Hali are no-brainers.
The choice is gonna be Howard or Smith. I think Howard is more valuable the next few years. Having Bailey, Howard and Poe locked up for the next 4-5 years would be huge. |

I think we can get by without Allen as well. He's not worth a big contract with being injury prone. I'd like him back but at a fair deal. If he leaves then we have..
Fish Morse Fulton LDT Reid Worst case. Add in an early and midrd pick for a starter and depth. |

One thing that needs to be said-- you bring Howard back at the risk of losing Poe. He is a FA after 2016.

Guys like Stephenson aren't cap casualties, they're guys you upgrade/replace. You don't lose Stephenson exclusively because you need to pay for someone else and have limited resources to do it with. You lose him because he's not a very good player. Smith, OTOH, is a guy we'd obviously love to have back but the realities of a cap league may intervene.

Also, use the money for Howard on Smith. Smith has been consistent where Howard as far exceeded in a contract year.
We should be able to keep him for $8.5-9m avg. That's right at 10th best |

I'm pretty sure Hali will end up retiring. His knees have derailed his effectiveness the last couple years and he just had a baby.

We only have 41m spent on defense next year and the cap will be 153m. No excuse to not have Berry, Smith, DJ, Devito and Abdullah back next year. |

If smith leaves we need to look at CB in early rounds again. To the people who say that gaines can step in, that's what you had to start the season and you saw how that went. I would sign smith over Howard. We seem good at uncovering good DL so I think we can do it again. At worst, bring devito back
