Song/Music Question

I stream Pandora when I'm at home and working, and I just thought of a question: when you listen to a song with words, do you really pay any attention to what the singer is saying? I don't. For example, I just listened to On Any Other Day by The Police, which I've probably heard a few hundred times in my life. Until today, when I looked up the lyrics, other than the song title, I hadn't thought about the rest of the words and didn't care enough to find out.

Is this common or uncommon?

I've always been melodic; I listen to the music itself. hell, there are songs that I've heard probably 1000 times that I couldn't tell you the words to.

my wife is the complete opposite. she's like freakin' Rain Main (the Hoffman variety , not CP) with song lyrics.

I'm pretty much the same. I may recall random lyrics but it's pretty rare that I actually pay attention to as if I were reading or dig for the meaning behind them.

Some of both. Most pop music is so vacuous that I don't really give a shit what they're saying.

With good hip hop and singer-songwriter stuff that I listen to, then the lyrics are hugely important.

I usually do. Unless I'm in my wife's car and she has her music on. Then I do my best not to listen to the words.

As a song writer, I pay attention and highly criticize lyrics.
I annoy myself and find it's better to be oblivious.

Sometimes the lyrics makes the song.

Sometimes the sound of the voice makes the song. Like an additional instrument.

Check out My Morning Jacket for a combination of the two.

John Mayer is a great lyricist but I am always distracted by the awesome guitar playing.

I play a variety of instruments so I'll tend to focus on one aspect.
For example, When I listen to "I'm the Man" by Joe Jackson I might focus on the bass line, the next time I might focus on the vocal style, (not so much the words or their meaning), next time might be percussion.
Lyrics are typically vapid horseshit so I don't generally care to pay any attention to them.

The words convey the emotion or message of the song...I do try to listen to the words....
