CBS NEWS: Hot Sauces Ranked By Heat

Hot sauces, ranked by heat:
http://www.cbsnews.com/pictures/hot-...d_id=61806652/

The listicle goes from one to twenty nine, even though they are listed as 1-30 with number 30 missing. Here are a few of my favorites from the list that I have tried and enjoyed over the years-other than that last one. I have never tried the stuff but I want to cook with it at some point, before I'm so old that it will kill me. The article has pics to jog your memory. Click on it to see them.

    • 26. Taco Bell Fire Sauce
    • This is the hottest sauce served in packets at the popular taco chain. It has 500 SHU... nowhere near the top of the scale.
    • Credit: Tacobell via Instagram
    • 24. Valentina Salsa Picante
    • Valentina Salsa is just starting to gain popularity in the United States, but it's the best-selling hot sauce in Mexico. It brings 900 SHU.
    • Credit: SalsaValentina via Facebook
    • 19. Valentina Salas Picanto - Extra Hot
    • Valentina's spicier version delivers 2,100 SHU — more than double the heat of its original.
    • Credit: SalsaValentina via Facebook
    • 18. Huy Fong Foods Sriracha Sauce
    • Sriracha creator David Tran said he set out to "make a rich man's sauce at a poor man's price."
    • The company has never advertised its products, but in 2010, Tran had to open a 650,000-square-foot facility to keep up with demand. Sriracha clocks in at 2,200 SHU.
    • Credit: Huyfongfoods via Instagram
    • 14. Tabasco Original Hot Sauce
    • The ubiquitous hot sauce has up to 5,000 SHU.
    • Credit: Tabasco via Instagram
    • 8. Dave’s Ultimate Insanity Hot Sauce
    • Dave's Gourmet recommends you use this sauce "one drop at a time." It boasts 250,000 SHU.
    • Credit: DavesGourmet via Facebook
    • 1. Blair’s 16 Million Reserve
    • The hottest hot sauce isn't really a sauce at all. It's packaged pure capsaicin crystals (the chemical compound that makes peppers hot), and is "not to be consumed or even opened without using extreme caution."
    • As the name suggests, it clocks in at 16,000,000 SHU.

I fail to see how the stopper is of any significance in this record. The challenge is to ingest large amounts of hot sauce.

I don't see anyone obligated to complete the gallon of milk challenge with a nipple!

My son made some cream cheese stuffed jalapenos wrapped in bacon slices just the other day. He pan fried them. They were pretty good, but they are so much better on the grill. He also just used cream cheese by itself as the stuffing. I like to thoroughly melt the cream cheese, fold in butter as it melts, then add sour cream. Then add a bunch of different seasoning and stuff; onion powder, garlic powder, white pepper, grated Parmesan, etc. And throw something on there from the Holy Trinity of hot sauces.

It is ridiculously good right off the grill as an appetizer.

This is actually pretty hot and pretty good. I like it on eggs and in cottage cheese. Avoid it touching your lips and you'll be ok.

Oh shit I forgot: After you have everything melted down and add the seasonings and stuff for the filling, put it back in the fridge. Make it a day before and leave it in the fridge overnight to stiffen up nicely so it stays in the jalapeno when you grill it.

Interesting to see Dave's and Blazzin back to back.

I don't like Dave's... don't care for the taste and my lips and mouth would burn for a long ass time. Seems like something you might add only for heat and pain.

I like Blazzin (going in, at least)... good flavor, IMO, and while it's definitely legit, it doesn't linger as long and feels like a different kind of heat.

Don't think I've tried anything hotter than Blazzin... next on the list is Quaker Steak, might try that out next time I'm in Omaha.

Awesome stuff. If it works out I'll get some pics and let you know what I think. Thanks!

I think it's easier without the stopper, simply because one can just chug the sauce. It only took me two or three chugs to down the bottle and it pretty much bypassed my tongue on the way down, so there wasn't much heat there.
The folks putting the money up for the challenge included some who, I think, thought I would have trouble downing the bottle in 10 seconds. (The challenge wasn't a bet. I would win the $28 if I completed the challenge and otherwise the others would just keep their money.) Anyway, I remember when the clock started, I grabbed a fork and ripped off the stopper, then chugged the bottle, which surprised a lot of the spectators and made them realize that I might actually end up winning the money.

When I was a college freshman, back in 1988-89, I guzzled about 8 ounces of Tabasco in a very short amount of time and then went a long amount of time without any food or drink in order to win a challenge from my dormitory housemates. I forget the exact details, but the short amount of time was 10 seconds or so and the longer time was either 20 or 30 minutes. The amount of Tabasco was what remained in a partially used 12-ounce "food service" bottle, which was about two-thirds full.

It was fairly easy money. I only made $28, but that was nice to have. The challenge came at the end of a spaghetti dinner in the dormitory. The dinner included some Italian bread, which somehow led to a discussion of food bets--there's a famous challenge where the consumer had to down a slice of Wonder Bread in 60 seconds without aid of beverage, something much harder than it sounds. Anyway, I did this in front of about 20 witnesses or so. (This was at the University of Chicago.) About 15 years later, I learned that the supposed Tabasco Sauce world record was some piddlin' amount, something like 2 2.75 ounce bottles, which I easily beat. However, when I drank the bottle, I first removed the stopper, whereas the Guinness record holders sucked the sauce through the stoppers, on TV, which would be harder. I'm sure the actual world record is way higher than what Guinness thinks it is, but it was probably witnessed by just some friends being silly.

Anyway, even though I like hot sauce, I don't see much point in having hot sauce so hot that it can't be used liberally over the food. If a drop or two is too hot to enjoy, what's the point? I like to use lots of hot sauce, preferably stuff with some flavor. I like Franks Red Hot and Tabasco. I'm starting to like Cholula and Tapatio, which are common in California and which I used to think were not flavorful. Sriacha is good, too, though I use it slightly differently than the other kinds of hot sauce.
I won $300 in college doing something similar. I drank a pint glass full of Tobasco sauce, with nothing to drink but one shotglass of water to wash it down with, and I had to hold it down for an hour without vomiting. This was after a night at the bar. The aftermath was horrid. But there's still a video of it around somewhere...
