http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/articl...m-178m-streams All About That Bass writer says he got $5,679 from 178 million streams "I've never heard a songwriter complain about radio royalties as much as streaming royalties," Mr Kadish said. "That was the real issue for us, like one million streams equals $90 (£59)". Mr Kadish co-wrote All About That Bass with singer Meghan Trainor. After offering the song to other artists and being turned down, Trainor went on to record the track herself. It became one of the biggest-selling digital singles of all time and launched her singing career. She also became the first act to enter the UK top 40 based purely on streams; and the song then spent four weeks on top of the chart. Speaking to a meeting hosted by the US House Judiciary Committee at a university in Tennessee, he explained that many songwriters face a challenge when it comes to streaming services. "For a song like All About That Bass, that I wrote, which had 178 million streams. I mean $5,679? That's my share," he is quoted as saying in a report from The Tennessean. "That's as big a song as a songwriter can have in their career and number one in 78 countries. But you're making $5,600. How do you feed your family?" Members of Congress are currently investigating music copyright to see if current laws are keeping up with advances in technology. "America's copyright industries - movies, television programming, music, books, video games and computer software - and technology sector are vitally important to our national economy," said Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte in a statement before the meeting. "The House Judiciary Committee's copyright review is focused on determining whether our copyright laws are still working in the digital age to reward creativity and innovation in order to ensure these crucial industries can thrive." |

But that's a legal issue thing versus a music creativity thing. There's enough lawyers on the planet that they'll eventually work that out I'm sure. I was actually reading up on the Spotify deal the other day. Very interesting and somewhat disturbing situation in terms of where the industry is right now from a pure "industry" stand point. I also find it interesting to read recent comments from a guy like Lars Ulrich, who was the primary force behind the squashing of Napster's peer to peer sharing from a legal perspective, but seems to not give much of a shit about the whole streaming services deal at this point: Quote:
The dude really, really, really gave a whole ton of shits about the money 15 years ago when he wasn't getting paid for all those Napster file shares. I wonder if he even knows about shit like Bandcamp. |

Unfortunately - a lot of those wax releases don't benefit the artist at all. Most have sold their rights off to huge companies that remarket, repackage and sell the songs any way they can. Rush just sold their entire portfolio. As a fan of music- it is not a good value to Buy music. Long gone are the CD's were every song is great all the way through. Musicians realize they will not be making money - and most are hardly putting lyrics and artwork on the CD's like they used to. Rock albums had beautiful artwork back in the day. The music / art work / and musicianship does not compare to that of twenty years ago. |

Good example how this generation has very shitty taste in music. It is all geared to 13 year old girls as I stated before. And he is complaining? It took him what 5 minutes to write that dumb song- 30 to mix it and shit it out to the public. Sorry but it is not like you wrote Stairway to Heaven or something. That dumb song managed to catch peoples 15 second attention span and he cashed in. |

I will argue that the music is just as good, if not better today. Artists are making music as music versus thinking that they have to fit into a specific nich/style in order to sell their music to a industry conglomerate in order to become Nickleback rich. Go download Bandcamp and use their new search feature. The length and breadth of high quality music that is available across the country/world right now is absolutely amazing. And that's at the pure grassroots level. I just picked up Angus & Julia Stone's "Down The Way" and London Grammar's "If You Wait." Phenomenal full albums all the way through. Florence and the Machine have done that for three straight albums now. The National as well. The Horrors. The xx. I could go on and on and on. Hell, go listen to one of our (Chief's Planet) own members (Molitoth) recent EP release - A Light Within's "Body Matter": https://alightwithin.bandcamp.com/ It's ****ing fantastic. If you don't think that there are great full albums being released all the time right now, you just aren't listening. Music as music is most definitely better in 2015 than it was in 1995. (I thought that the mid '90s to early 2000's was a very stagnant period in music from a creative standpoint.) Last edited by Saccopoo; 09-24-2015 at 12:32 PM.. |

It's always been about 13 year old girls. Shawn Cassidy Early Frank Sinatra The Everly Brothers Taylor Swift Duran Duran On and on and on and on. Pop rock has always attempted to capture that market share because it's a huge market share. |

On the other hand, from the consumer's point of view, today is a golden age in terms of the ability to find new music. No longer do you have to buy an entire album to find out what's in it (with the very limited exceptions of those songs that made it onto radio). Now, thanks to the internet and all kinds of legal and illegal music sources, it's easy to find and try tons of new music before you decide what you want to buy. It might be that less compensation for music creators will eventually cause new music to dry up which would be bad for both creators and consumers. But it's also possible that future starving artists will continue to create new music just because they love to do it even if there's less compensation which would mean that while creators are hurt, consumers may still be better off.
