Tipping for services...
Not like restaurant tipping for the waiter, but tipping gardeners, postman, house cleaners, etc. Do you do it, and generally how much?

This is the first year we've paid a guy to handle our lawn. It's a business, but he's the only guy doing it. What's appropriate? Is cash preferred, or is a personal gift (wine, homemade goodies, or something) better?

whether a sole prop or overseeing employees, when the owner services you, it is expected that his ownership in the company is providing adequate compensation. You certain CAN tip, but not necessary.

On a side note, I DO tip the gal that cuts my hair even though she owns the salon, but only because I still pay $10 for a haircut like I did 15 years ago, and she cuts my kid's hair for free every other month.

I'm entirely too poor to pay someone to do those things.

My take on it is if you value the job that they did more than the money you gave them, true it up. But if it is an hourly thing, I probably wouldn't tip.

tipping movers in 100+ degree heat going up/down 2 flights of stairs moving out of our apartment, I felt warranted a little more scratch for those guys.

I used to chat my mailman up when I lived downtown, gave him a slice of pizza one night when he was delivering late and I was walking in with a pizza. After that the guy started leaving me messages in my mailbox offering to hook me up with dvd's that hadn't been released. It got awkward and I kind of backed off chatting him up. Afterwards, I kept having stuff get "lost in the mail" including a US passport. It wasn't frequent enough to really point a finger at him, but I knew it was him.

A mailman can **** your world up. I stick with a pleasant hello at that's it.

My mail lady congratulated me on my divorce being final because she saw it in the newspaper. We'd never had a real conversation prior to that.
