Competition Committee to true NFL Fans: Get ****ed

From ProFootballTalk:

Quote:
Illegal contact penalties are way up this preseason, the result of the league office telling officials to monitor defensive backs closely and throw flags with impunity. That will continue in the regular season.

“We’re not going to change how we’re calling the games once the regular-season starts,’’ NFL V.P. of officiating Dean Blandino told The MMQB.

I wonder what the betting line is for whether a game this season will have the highest score ever by one team or both teams. Are the records still 73 points and 113 points? I know they were back when I tracked it, but maybe they were broken a dozen or so times last season.
The highest scoring game last season was 99 points total (Denver 51, Dallas 48)

With all the hand-wringing about offensive bias in recent years, it is surprising that the record for most points in a game (Washington 72, NYG 41 in 1966) is almost half a century old, and the highest scoring game in recent history (Cincinnati 58, Cleveland 48 in 2004) is a decade old.

Combined points in a game will get matched and broken and broken again this season. Mark it down.

What was the average game score in those years?

Looking at the high instead of the average...you are a good statistician, you know better than that.

People always talk mad shit on me when I say this but I don't see how it isn't true.

The game isn't the most important thing to the NFL.

The most important thing is TV revenue...any of you bitching about the game to the NFL will just have to deal apparently. They don't give a shit.

I just looked up the box score for that 1966 game, and it's bizarre. There were 8 touchdowns of more than 40 yards in that game. Three were passes, two were runs, and there was also a punt return, interception return, and fumble return.

I wouldn't mind this change so much if they also call the WR's for the same BS. I can't tell how many times I saw WR's push off before the ball was even thrown to get the advantage for a long play.

I was responding to a post about high scores, in case you couldn't tell.

But to answer your question, the average combined score in 2013 was 46.8 points. In 2005 it was 41.2 (down from 43 in 2004), and in 1966 it was 43.4 (down from 46.2 in 1965).

The highest scoring season was 1948, at 47.2 points per game.

Since 1947 (67 years) average combined scoring has dipped below 40 points only 11 times, 7 of which were between 1970-1978.

Last season was abnormally high, but there have been abnormally high scoring seasons before.

Yup, that is my gripe with it. I want fair competition, not this legalized cheating crap to let Manning have a better shot at the Superbowl.

Automatic first downs need to be gone by yesterday. Defensive holding should be 5 yards from the LOS, illegal contact should be spot of the foul and repeat the down, pass interference should be 15 yards from the LOS and repeat the down unless the yardage cross the first down marker.

Last season will likely prove to be much more "normal" when this year's totals come in about the same, if not a bit higher.

The averages aren't going to trend down from here.

TV ratings play huge into this decision. We joke about the rules trying to get Manning a ring before he hangs it up, but that's not far removed from the truth. The NFL wants to see a Super Bowl that has a final score of 42-41, preferably with one of their golden boys winning it all. Makes for "good TV".

To be honest, the 1970-1978 period is the most interesting to me. I wonder how much of the worry about high scoring is coming from people who remember those as the glory years of the NFL, not recognizing that those years were the abnormal ones, viewed within the entire history of the NFL.

You definitely have a good point there. I'm guessing there's a good number of posters here that cut their teeth during that period.

Let's look at which teams benefited the most from penalties, in terms of 1st downs awarded by penalties as a percentage of total 1st downs achieved. This should give us a sense of which teams get the home-cooking calls at just the right time to extend a drive.

With 13.8% of their 1st downs coming by penalty, the most ref/league favored team is...

Tampa Bay.

Followed closely, at 13.0% by...

Buffalo.

Well, that's just 2 teams. let's look at the top quarter of the league, we're sure to see some familiar names...

Tampa Bay
Buffalo
Baltimore
St. Louis
Indianapolis
Arizona
Atlanta
Tennessee

Yep, those sure are the ESPN-preferred, money making franchises the rest of the league is envious of.
