You can't be a fan of rock and roll and not be a Chuck Berry fan. His music is so amazing today that I can't even imagine what it was like to people back in the 1950s.

Strange to think he'd have never been anything if not for his cousin Marvin.

Chuck invented the basic grammar for playing rock and roll guitar. He knew a thing or two about writing lyrics also.
We lost a great one. |

In 7th grade I got sent to the principals office because I brought my Reelin and Rockin 45 to music class for record day. Thank you for the swat Mr. Maggard.........asshole. The look on Mrs. Crafts face as she shot across the room to rip my record off the turntable was priceless.

My good pal Marc is a pretty well known songwriter/musician in St. Louis. He posted this story on his Facebook tonight: I met Chuck at Lambert Airport. He was sitting on a stanchion on the lower level, smoking a cigarette. Guitar case at his feet. I walked up to him and asked for his autograph. He said "Of course." I dug around in my bag for my lyric book and handed it to him. He looked at the pages and said "These words look important." I told him they were lyrics. He found a blank page, wrote his name, then said "Don't stop." I haven't. If you come to the Songbird Café this Wednesday night you'll get one of those compositions that is actually dedicated, in part, to Chuck.

The three greatest Missourians are Harry Truman, Mark Twain, and Chuck Berry, in that order.

I've got nothing against Harry, but I have to go with Mark Twain in the #1 spot.
