Count the candy hearts contest. Will you help me win?
Hello CP!

My "office" is holding a "count the candy hearts" contest and the winner will receive a pretty bad-ass massaging chair cover. As I work from home and complain about my back too much, I am hoping to win.

Are there any mathematicians or super good guessers out there who can get this on the nose or very close? Unlike most things on CP, if you guys could somehow come up with a consensus, that would be helpful too.

Note- Submission date is 1/27 and results 1/28. Will keep you posted on what I end up submitting and the answer.

Not exact, but a good estimate, realizing the jar is not a perfect cylinder:

A sharpie marker is 5.3 inches long and 0.4 inches tall. Assume the diameter of the jar is 1 sharpie marker and it's 8 sharpie markers tall.

The volume of the jar then is pi*(5.3/2)^2*8*.4 = 70.6 in^3

The volume of a candy heart is .5 in wide * 0.625 in long * 0.25 in high (estimate on the height) = 0.078125 in^3

# candy hearts = volume of jar / volume of candy heart = 904

I think we need to add a "packing efficiency" variable to that. The hearts aren't going to stack together in the most efficient manner. I bet the packing efficiency is around .5 at best.
