Life Possibly getting married, what do I need to know about a prenup - Page 5

No kids, only have cat, but have multiple properties and liquid assets. Plan on filing separately even if get married. What do I need to know?

If she's pulling in a 6 figure income and putting a large chunk toward paying off the debt, so she doesn't follow in her parents footsteps that's different but you haven't mentioned her income situation which suggests it's not ideal.

Idealistic. Touching. Idiotic. Marriage is also one of the biggest economic commitments you can make. Where the parties come to the marriage with a gross economic disparity, ignoring that fact is dumb.

If you don't have faith that you are marrying the right person and that your marriage will last you shouldn't get married. One of the reasons that 50% of marriages end in divorce is that people jump into marriage without taking it seriously enough.

People change.

Morally, spiritually, religiously you may decide to honor your vows to a "different" woman. But that doesn't mean you have to let a court make that choice for you out of fear.

No. If the assets are not terribly significant, once you factor in earning potential, then a pre-nup isn't important. If I come into a marriage with $25,000 and my wife-to-be has $5,000, then it's not anywhere near a big enough disparity to lawyer up over.

Way to exaggerate.

The bottom line is that if one party has significant more income/assets than the other, then he is taking MUCH more risk in getting married than their partner. You manage that risk with a pre-nup.

Or, you know, don't worry about it if you get completely ****ED in the future. I'm not a divorce lawyer but I've seen people get absolutely wrecked when they should have had a pre-nup. You only have to see that once or twice before you realize how completely stupid that is.

You should also have an adult, rational, conversation about finances, budgets, joint accounts, and that stuff, but that isnt' really legal as practical and to avoid arguments in the future.

So love trumps all? Don't worry about what you have or what she has, this is for LIFE. If you love her, then assets don't matter, damn the torpedoes and full steam ahead.

Yeah -- then when you find out your wife is going to own 25% of the business that your father started and handed down to you and your brother, which your family built through years of hard work BEFORE you married her, and now she is leveraging that to not only get the house, the kids, the alimony, the child support, but will give up the 25% only for SICK money -- on top of 50% of the cash?

Yeah, are you ****ING INSANE?

Whatever it is in life you deal with, it's not the assets of wealthy people. That much is clear.

This view is exceedingly romantic.

You can have all the confidence in the world in a decision you're making, but marriage doesn't involve just one person. As someone mentioned, people change. Who's to say this girl won't just wake up one day and "realize she doesn't love him anymore"? That sort of thing happens all the time.

If finances and assets are important to him then it's smart to get some insurance going forward.
