Off Season Lets Talk Guns

Been a while since we had a guns n' ammo discussion.

Some of you are AR shooters Im sure. Im looking at a Colt 6920. Will be my first AR. Picked up a Glock this fall and really enjoy shooting it. Any feedback on that weapon?

Anyone else been in a buy/sell/trade mood with hardware?

And thank you every one for the feed back. I know that I'll need to confirm all this with local PD, but its good no one has come out and said "no you can't do that."

I don't blame you for carrying but again a 9mm isn't dropping anything but a human save maybe a small wolf. You hit a bear with a 9mm and most likely you'll just piss it off. Feeling safe and being safe are two different things. I mean if you really want to be protected from something that can make you dinner I would look at nothing less than a .357. I'm pretty sure Bwana packs a 500 S&W has his bear protection, which is overkill for the casual backwoodser, but none the less.

Actually it used to be in Estes Park and parks in California that you could not carry firearms. They changed that law a few years ago and I believe all State Parks must allow open-carry provided you are legally able to carry. IIRC, there is NO CCW in State Parks.

Don't have a pistol larger. Hope there are no bears.

I would be less worried about bears really than anything. Just make plenty of noise while you walk, stay on trail and you should be safe. As long as you don't walk up on some cubs. Then start backtracking slow but quickly.

I'd say it's the mountain lions you have to worry about since they are sneaky-sneaky. And like I said, I've always been told a male moose in rut is the absolute last thing you ever want to encounter.

I've also heard of people carrying "pepper bells" when they hike. Bears do not like capsaicin which is what is in bear spray. Take that for what it's worth.

If you get some nasty self-defense ammo (which you should already have), a 9mm will pack as much punch as a regular .45. You won't be seeing any Grizzlies.

Which, depending on the critter of course, still isn't enough, imo. Going into bear country, I want something that will drop a bear or least give me a good chance at dropping a bear. If I can drop a bear I am probably going to be able to drop anything else, maybe.

Might as well go to a 44 or .357 mag minimum or carry a shotgun loaded with slugs.

I'd say .357 mag. I think it's easier to be more accurate than a 44. Although you pose an interesting bogle...
I'm not carrying a shotgun along with my backpack...sidearm only. Wife won't let me get a .500 or at least says that's not worth it......

I have been thinking about a S&W 686 for some time now.

Thanks a lot Pete.

Just go full Rick Grimes and get a Python to get every fps out of the .357.
