I say if you play Mahomes you play it very conservative. I'd go very run heavy and not count on him to win the game. Let him get some experience but don't overwhelm him. A line of 13/20 for 175 yards, 1 touchdown, 1 interception would be perfectly fine in my opinion, especially for his first game action on the road against a top defense.

Alex doesn't strike me as the kind of QB that can take a week off and not miss a beat.

He took a week off before the 2013 Colts playoff game, so it's definitely not going to hurt Smith

And that's fine. Don't overwhelm him. Even a loss where we run a vanilla offense is beneficial to him, as long as he gets experience and has some positives to take away from the experience.

Don't play him because he could get hurt? He could get hurt at practice, slip on some ice walking his dog etc. He's big man in great shape entering his athletic prime. He's not a piece of China.

You can’t live in fear of injury and let that affect your decisions. There is always a chance of injury. There’s a chance every game Alex plays. Why would Mahomes get injured any more than Alex? Other than that is what you fear. The worst case scenario isn’t more likely to happen just because you fear it.

Unless you believe in jinxes and other nonsense.

Versus him getting hurt early next season after Smith is dealt and starting Tyler Brey all season? He's not a fragile 33 year old like Smith. Give him a shot. Take him out if we have a nice lead.

It wouldn't be a foolish idea to start Brey. But you're likely conceding the win, whereas you probably win the game if Mahomes plays, AND you get an idea of how NFL-ready he is against a solid defense on the road.
