To Amazon Prime or NOT to Amazon Prime

Sorry if Q, but I'm on the fence about doing the whole Amazon Prime thing. Seems like getting rid of Netflix all but pays for it, but wanted to ask the opinions of others in this Mecca of awesome knowledge called Chiefs Planet..

Is Amazon Prime really worth it over eBay when you buy, let's say, 5-7 items a month? I ask because I always do the "price+shipping" deal, so it seem like it's a wash at some level. That being said, "Prime" would ALWAYS mean two-day shipping, and that's something I hardly ever do on eBay, so it could be a deal that makes it worth it enough to buy 15-20 things a month. The whole "eliminating some of the instant gratification culture/concern" deal...

Oh, and I've heard that if you use an "edu" account it's free for six months (perhaps not a big deal over a lifetime!!), but is then like half the cost. Does anybody know if that's true? If so, and it' the son who has the "edu" account, how does "Dad" pull off that scam without having the kid able to buy pretty-much anything he's ever wanted?

Thanks in advance... Just looking for some opinions before I leap...

No clue. I've been busier than hell and haven't been there since I rode my bike through there last fall.

I don't think it's down a bunch or has bluegreen algae. I think the big spring may have dried up though. For sure but I heard it.

I've been doing good so far at lake Wilson this year so I'm just going stay close to home then. I do miss Scott Lake from when I grew up camping there.

Been with Prime for a few years now, and love it. The price is going up from $79 to $99 (or maybe already has), but you can gift yourself a subscription for a future date - as in the day before you current sub expires - to lock in the price for the future. I did one year, and we'll see how it is going by then. Didn't wanna risk two years b/c that's $160 to lay out on spec.

More importantly, if you're doing Prime you need to do Amazon Mom. You don't really need to have children, you can basically just make up any relationship to a child (grandkid, niece, nephew, cousin, etc.) and qualify. 20% off diapers and wipes immediately, and then if you're doing subscribe & save for 5 items a month you get 20% off the whole lot. I get all my household supplies this way and save on gas too. Not to mention time at the stores.

If you are on the fence about getting Prime, I might also suggest enrolling in Bing rewards. You can very easily get a $5/month Amazon gift card for click activity - which can be completely automated and done in less than 3 minutes daily. Basically the service is paid for and you can just enjoy the shipping/streaming. There are definitely points for referral bonuses so if you want to know more and don't mind clicking through my link so we both get credited, drop me a PM (I don't want to spam with my link).

I might just do that... I'm pretty sure I'll do it, but the "Mom" angle seems interesting... Don't have babies running around, but if it's good for other stuff, that'd be interesting to hear.

That being said, I'm not sure I want to get too deep in the hole either. I suspect eBay will figure-out how much business they're losing based on the 2-day shipping deal, and try to compete. Perhaps not, but at this point they'd be stupid not to see the people fleeing.

And going back to what I read about the streaming saga, and seeing it for what it is, I can see the "corporate machine" at play there too. Everybody knows Amazon owns Kindle, we know that business unit prolly wants them to keep video streaming on Droid devices specific to THEIR Kindle product, and the corporate machine is giving in. I'm sure it'll change at some point and the world will see a Droid App for streaming like is available on Apple products, but it does show them for the ruthless corporate giant they are.

But this has been an awesome thread and I'm waiting for the next "big round of buying" I do (I just got done with a burst using eBay), then I'll sign-up.

And I think I've figured-out the "student" deal. I can use my own account, all I'd need is a copy of my son's student ID to seal the deal. That way it'd be "mine", but just getting the price break because he's a student. Heck, much of it will be for him, so it's hardly a scam of the system! But alas, I'm still not sure what the other gotcha's might be by doing so. I'll throw a dart at a dart board to help me figure it out soon enough...

No one has addressed this concern yet. I'm interested in how it works also.

You're assuming that the things you want to buy are sold locally and/or options other than Wal Mart or other "non local" sources exist.

For that matter, Target offers a price match policy regarding both Walmart and Amazon online pricing.
Amazon also has a no-questions-asked return policy.

Ever tried returning something to Wal Mart lately? I'd much rather talk to a polite Indian or Philipino than deal with the rude, abrasive, toothless trailer trash at the Wal Mart service desk.

What is it about Wal Mart that brings out the dregs of society?

Target doesn't attract that clientele and their prices are fairly similar to Wal Mart.

I use it a lot. I've found that I can buy bike parts & accessories at up to about 50% of what my local bike shop charges me. That paid for it. I never use the streaming videos. I haven't even looked at it for years, but their selection was shit back then. Maybe it is better, but I still have Netflix.

Yep. Amazon has some of the best customer service anywhere. They'll do things nobody else will do (like give me a full refund on an electronic device that failed 30 days after the initial return period).

Not sure exactly where Bwana lives, but in very remote areas, I know they sometimes fudge on the two-day guarantee.

That said, if your confirmation email says "guaranteed delivery date," you're absolutely correct - they'll tack on a free month if it's not there by that date.

Yep. I'm not even rural, and by the end of February they'd missed "guaranteed" delivery four times for me. I called them every time, and I got a total of 6 months free Prime and $50 in gift cards. One time, they gave me a $30 gift card that more than covered the total purchase I'd made. So I got my product one day late, but for free plus about $6.

WalMart hires the dregs of society. The dregs have a place. It's their place.

Leave it alone, it keeps them away from everywhere else.
