Many people don't know that Hugh Hefner really helped him breakthrough with his early comedy and political views with the Playboy Club appearances in the 60's.

Tough crowd . . . .

Just one bump in case people who weren't around yesterday didn't hear.

I vaguely knew the name, but I never saw him in anything and never heard his act. I remember something about him helping massively obese people in the 1980s, and that was really all I ever knew about him.

Not meaning to be pointing and laughing, but holy cow, look at the size of the casket in this article (not Dick's casket, but one of the obese people he worked with). Some future archaeologist is going scream like a little girl when that thing gets unearthed 10,000 years from now: http://flashbak.com/in-the-1980s-dic...t-project-699/

He's kind of a comedic Hank Aaron in that sense. There was a time when the comedy circuit was segregated as anything else, and he paved the way for mainstream acceptance of Cosby and then Pryor after him. Not as militant as Paul Mooney, not as chitlin as Moms Mabley, not as clean cut as Cosby [used to be], not as scatological as Pryor or Redd Foxx, but a pioneer.

First black comedian on the couch of The Tonight Show with Paar.

At first I thought this was the guy who played Inspector Luger on Barney Miller, but that was James Gregory.

Wilson was funny Gregory wasn't and I am old enough to have seen him plenty. Just wasn't my kinda comedy. I stayed away this mainly because the old adage if you have nothing good to say say nothing at all, guess I broke that rule.

RIP Mr. Gregory. I thought at first from the picture he was Grady from Sanford and Son but it turns out I never heard of him. None the less it appears like he was a good guy.
