Which would you sign.

For the sake of argument, let's assume the following contracts (without getting into the details too much):

Sean Smith gets a 5 year, 52.5 million deal (10.5 per). First year cap hit is 6.6 m to fit cap constraints. Roughly on par with Byron Maxwell's deal (5th highest for a CB).

Jaye Howard gets a 4 year, 36 million deal (9.0 per). First year cap hit is 6.6 m to fit cap constraints. Roughly on par with Derek Wolfe's and Jurrell Casey's deals (6th and 7th highest for 3-4 DE).

Smith I think is more needed but at his age is likely to decline sooner. Basically the only reason I took Howard, even through I really like Howard.

If we keep Howard over Smith I'd choose Jeremy Lane to replace him. Same exact style in Seattle and he fits the mold perfectly.

Our CB tandem is such a huge key for this defense. Would rather keep Smith and let Dorsey find another star lineman in the making.

I don't think this is right. A good pass rush makes a QB rush a throw or force it into a first read, but with a bad CB, that is still a makeable pass. A CB who can shut down a receiver makes the QB go through reads (especially with another great CB like Peters). This give the pass rush an extra step or more that again leads to bad passes or sacks.

You franchise tag Sean Smith. If our DL suffers, so be it. We draft a versatile ILB to start next to DJ that should make all the difference. Look at what Seattle did with Mebane at NT and Wagner/Irvin as their LB's. Very few sacks created by the Seahawks but they gave up a measly 3.1 rush yards per attempt and allowed their elite corners to shut down receivers.

Gaines, Berry, Parker, Smith, Peters would be special.

Well-balanced, tough, and versatile 3-4 DEs like Jaye Howard are not.

Why say bye to Howard? Let the often injured Devito walk and use his money to keep Howard.

Resign Sean because I hate shit shows on the backend. Not to mention rooks second years can be brutal. Need Smith for leadership.
