If 'fairly nice' is sit down/service, I could add several more going down a notch.... Longboard's, Twisted Fresh, Pepperjax, Don Antonio's (by the Speedway though).... they're all made in front of you or at least made to order. Might actually be better options for a quick bite before getting out of town, but not sure any are around the stadium.

I have to agree....Years ago there was a spot in Shawnee called KT Fryers. Pretty much like Strouds, but they made Strouds look like beginners. Damned place burnt down a few years later though and never came back. I (think) I heard the rumor that the owner torched his own place - but do NOT know if this was true, but DAMN the chicken fried steak was to DIE for... |

FTR, if all Stroud did was their green beans and potatoes'n'gravy, I'd be OK with that, but the last time was there [Fairway losation] their chicken was still good. With the caveat that I'm not the biggest fried chicken fan, but find theirs good, and I only eat the white meat. The important thing to point out is, if you're looking for non-BBQ cuisine that's distinctively KC [see OP], Strouds fits the bill. The concept of family-style sitdown dining with 'signature' side dishes to go with the main course [usually chicken], and everything being cooked to order usually means fresh ingredients and attention to detail. If the day is off, or you go at a bad time, it might not measure up, but compared to the rest of KC cuisine, particularly when you take away BBQ, it's fairly distinctive and enjoyable. And since it's luv, who I believe is down in Springfield, adjust your expecations based on what you think of Lamberts, which serves a wider array of dishes, but has the same 'family style' concept and popularity. I no longer live in KC but you need to be more specific as to what you like/ want to try and a budget for the food it'self as KC has so many great places to eat.
Some of the more popular places mentioned are very good but when I go to another city I want something I can't get at home or something I like at home that has been elevated to a new level. I never eat steak out, seldom BBQ unless it's Joe's KC or Jack's. KC has a nice array of ethnic restaurants that I am sure you won't find in Springfield. Italian. German, Indian, African, Jamaican, Spanish, ... Mesob is an excellent choice, Jazz also for cajun, creole. For Italian Garrozo's Jaspers and Cascones. And all are $$ These (below) are a total waste of bandwidth... I think if you give us a direction these guys could steer you to the right places, some already have. Quote:
