Restaurants ideas outside of BBQ realm

Alrighty. We're looking at going to Michael Smiths. We were looking at Bluestem, but the price was just out of what we were looking to spend. My boyfriend decided on Michael Smith's because he has received a Michelin star, and the price is just about where we are comfortable spending. Just thought I would see if anyone has eaten there, or if you know of any other restaurants with Michelin star chefs in the area.

We'll be there early enough to sit down and have a nice lunch. I wouldn't mind finding someplace local that's in a "trendy" area like Westport or P&L just to be able to kind of show him the area as well. I'm an Arthur Bryant's fan, so I'd probably take him there if we decide on BBQ. Otherwise, just gathering ideas for say, under $40 for both of us. Shouldn't be too hard to do with lunch menus. We'll also be saving drinking for the tailgate. Enjoying the recommendations and conversations so far. Thanks all.

We lived in north kc when I was in school and used to go to Chappells a lot. They make their own honey mustard which is good. There's a sand which place next to it called jersey boys that's good as well.

Kc smoke burger used to be good as well, not sure if it's still there or not

Luv, you are a sports fan. Chappels in North Kansas City totally fits the bill. It's a sports bar and sports museum. The guys collection has been talked about in Sports Illustrated and other magazines. It is really impressive. The food is good, not great. For under $40 for the two of you, it would fit the bill.

It was popular for us partially because they executed so well, but mainly because they were just around the corner from grandma, so it was easy to get to.

FTR, if all Stroud did was their green beans and potatoes'n'gravy, I'd be OK with that, but the last time was there [Fairway losation] their chicken was still good. With the caveat that I'm not the biggest fried chicken fan, but find theirs good, and I only eat the white meat.

The important thing to point out is, if you're looking for non-BBQ cuisine that's distinctively KC [see OP], Strouds fits the bill. The concept of family-style sitdown dining with 'signature' side dishes to go with the main course [usually chicken], and everything being cooked to order usually means fresh ingredients and attention to detail. If the day is off, or you go at a bad time, it might not measure up, but compared to the rest of KC cuisine, particularly when you take away BBQ, it's fairly distinctive and enjoyable.

And since it's luv, who I believe is down in Springfield, adjust your expecations based on what you think of Lamberts, which serves a wider array of dishes, but has the same 'family style' concept and popularity.
Yeah. Being in Springfield, we have our fill of comfort food specialty restaurants. I haven't been to Lambert's in ages, but their rolls and chicken & dumplings are awesome, as is their chicken fried steak and fried okra.

Anyway, I'm starting to think that we may just hit Westport and see what catches our eye....if we don't get BBQ.

Indeed. I haven't been to Strouds (up north) in years - but the Wife and I hit the shrouds over in OP when it first opened and, frankly, it was god-awful. I don't know if it was just a "newly-opened" thing or what - and that was several years ago - but we've never been back - for no other reason than we just don't get over that way a lot.

Another place that I "used" to like was Jess and Jims....but not so much any longer.

Checked out the menu, and everything sounds awesome (I love spice). However, they're not open on Mondays.

Now to try out that second link...

Actually, I think I've been to the 801 Chophouse at the P&L. Not quite looking for that fine of dining.

If you go to Pig and Finch order the short rib ragu, and the espresso rubbed pork shoulder.

The two best things on the menu IMO and you will not be disappointed.

If you like a good burger, westport flea market is the place. It's not the only place to get a good burger and it's not fancy, but it's a kansas city institution that meets your price requirement and it's close to westport per your instructions above.

Strouds will cost a little more than that, but don't listen to the people talking down their food. It's still good. But expense, the potential for a long wait, and the fact that it's not in your areas of interest are against it.

Stroud's gets a lot of bad run on here for no reason. Some people don't think it's "the greatest chicken ever" and I get that. Their chicken strips are enormous and very good, no better mashed potatoes and gravy, and the cinnamon rolls are a great finisher. i'm a big fan of green beans and love those too. They also do chicken gizzards and fried chicken livers if you're into that kind of thing. I'm not.

Look, you don't stay in the restaurant business for 80 years if you don't have something going for you. Just sayin....

Agree. I'm usually meh about green beans, but I love Strouds' version. I don't think it's a fit for luv's trip this time though, for reasons mentioned in my last post.
