Drama queens.
The Chiefs lost a top 10 NFL left tackle and a guard who'd proved to be very adequate (and who would not have broken the bank to bring back).

Here's the real issue I think we're trying to hit upon:
The Chiefs needed to improve in several areas over last year's team to again be a playoff team considering the tick up in schedule, notably:

OL
WR
DL
S

They've done nothing in FA to improve those spots so far. The big targets are all off of the board, leaving them dependent on striking gold with a bottom-of-the-barrel guy in FA or filling through the draft.

KC had a chance to address one of these spots with a proven playmaking WR who has a history with this coach and who has the speed and big-play ability to be a threat to take it the distance in the short, intermediate and deep passing games.

Instead, they didn't. And he signed an extremely low-cost deal that the Chiefs could have made work with minimal salary cap shuffling.

I don't agree that this organization could have sold another miserable season after that fan revolt. I don't like what they did last year, but it brought arrowhead back. I'll give them that.

I think it's silly to say we are now locked into this strategy just because we did it last year. Nevermind that we have an improving cap situation after this year and most of those contracts go off the books. If we draft well, we can be competitive now, be very competitive next year, and have a new core by the time our current core drops out. I don't know why you seem to think that is such an impossible option or that it's any more risky than giving ourselves a 2 - 3 year window to win now behind a team that needs a lot of help.

No, I don't think they're the only two. They're just a few of the many ways you can build a team/franchise. But they're a few that are glaringly absent from the way the Chiefs have operated.

Hopefully, you aren't naive enough to think they're building for now and trying to win now and are going to be able to IMPROVE on last year's team (which must be done to get to .500, let alone get back to the playoffs and actually have a chance to win) with a 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th and two 6ths, and a bunch of second-tier, cast-off, minimum FAs.
The majority of teams that dance around the cap do so because they have a stacked team or special talent but just a short window left. Aka Denver, pats, new Orleans. The others do it because they have a young pipeline so while Seattle gets praised for bringing free agents like Avril in, nobody flinched when they lose several starters this year and nobody mentions that they cut starters all the time to let bench talent start.

With good drafts, the chiefs can afford to use free agency strategically versus throwing money at any player who fills one of many needs.

I look at it that the 2012 2-win team was virtually the same as the 2013 team with the exception of a better HC, better QB playing a soft schedule. Talent wise both teams are probably around 7-9, 8-8 or 9-7. And I bet this years team will be around those same records.

Yes. Going to the playoffs is a good thing. I understand how horrible that playoff game was, I was sick for weeks about it, but it doesn't turn what did happen before into a failure.

Going from 2 wins to 11 isn't a regular thing. I know people say, but we played all these bad teams. Well, the Chiefs WERE a bad team, and beating bad teams is what you should do if you aren't one of them. Before the season started I would've taken 8 wins and missing the playoffs and called it a good start. I know expectations change, mine did too.

Sorry, I'm a homer i guess. I liked what happed and I'm confidant in Reid.

It's comical all of the chicken littles in this thread...
Do you see a realistic scenario where the Chiefs can successfully fill all of their current needs in the draft with 6 draft picks and no second round pick?

I guess that depends on what you consider needs, but yes I think it can happen.

Are they going to fill those needs with all pros? Not likely. But realistically, safety and WR are more wants than needs. We have players on the roster than can fill those roles.

I only see one glaring hole . Guard. The next closest thing to a hole is DE, and the league is full 3-4 starting DEs that no one has heard of. It's not a make or break spot.

Honestly I'm more upset about not having a 2nd round pick in such a deep draft than I am about the lack of FA activity. This front office has spent money to keep guys here. Now the cap reflects it and they are exercising responsibility. This is the price paid for keeping guys like Flowers, Hali, DJ, Charles, Bowe, etc. We have a shit load of former pro bowlers on the team. Those are guys that cost KC money to keep.

Doesn't really matter. With Smith under center, the Chiefs should dedicate most of their resources to defense, anyway.
