The bus stations were sketchy as hell but someone was always there to meet me so that wasn't an issue either. |

Back in the mid-fifties we lived off 55th & Cleveland. Across Swope Parkway and down the hill was, to us kids, a forest that we would roam all day long. At the Wye between Swope Parkway and Cleveland stood an enormous Mulberry tree, just perfect for climbing. That and shooting just about ripe Mulberrys at passing cars. One winter the city closed down eastbound 63rd Street, doused the snowpack with water and opened it to sledding. One hell of a ride down the hill, until you got to the end and realized that you had to walk back up the hill.
Moved to 46th & Fairmount (west of the plaza), but all my friends were off Cleveland. I followed a bus from the Plaza to close to the old gang. Eventually found a shortcut using Brush Creek since it was all concrete paved. Some of the curved tunnels were a bit scary, but it was doable. A couple of years later, moved to Platte Woods for a year. Back then, there a lot of farm fields, creeks, and woods. During winter, we found a great sledding area down a farm field, through the path though the woods, and if you made the turn, you could sled quite a ways down the frozen creek. My old Flexible Flyer had a big crack in the middle slat from me not making the turn to the creek. And for Christmas, I got a Mossberg 410 shotgun for Christmas that I still have. Then moved to 46th& Paseo for a year. Didn't have much of anything going on in that neighborhood. Then moved to Shawnee KS, off 61st & Larsen Lane. We had a lake that spanned three backyards. During the summers we had pop bottle rocket fights across the lake. But no rockets with reports we allowed. That and setting off Bulldogs (Silver Salutes) and M-80's. I could by those by the gross at Dogpatch at LOTO and resell them to the neighbor kids for at least double, if not triple of what they cost me. We would carve out wooden boats from old 2x4s and hold out own little regattas, if the wind was just right. Being in high school, Saturday night were taken up by cruising through the various Allen's and Winsteads from Shawnee to the Plaza. Great times.

We just ran our ****ing city. Morning to night, riding our bikes miles across the city. No phones so mom had no clue where the **** we were and it never seemed to bother her.
She was an extremely lax parent, though. I remember when I moved in with my dad around the age of 13. One time I was going about a half mile away to play basketball at a church and called my dad at work to let him know. He didn't pick up so I just left a message and went. He went off on me later that night. "Don't leave without me knowing where you're going, blah blah blah". It was a tough transition. |

But mostly I just remember being outside ALL THE TIME.
I'm not sure if it's just my area or my perception but I don't see kids out and about so much as I feel we were back in the days. Honestly, I know I'll be one of those extreme helicopter parents myself so I'm hesitant to have kids. I'd worry too much. |

On days when I didn't have to work or do chores, I'd eat breakfast and hop on my motorcycle with my pole and tackle box, and fish various farm ponds around a 10 square mile area. Or grab my .22 and a bucket of bullets and shoot shit all day. No cell phone. Parents had no clue where I was for the entire day, with no way to contact me. And that was perfectly normal.
I miss that.

Walking a couple of miles to school and back each day. And when school was over....I'd walk home with my brother and we'd be by ourselves until my parents got home from work. And this started when my brother was probably in 4th or 5th grade.

When I was a kid..you know what Google was?
It was a pair of sneakers and a trip to the library. most of us never did this of course and it took time to learn 3 or 4 things. Now it takes 15 minutes to find out 20 things. |
