I'm fine with it, if they can get value. But I'm also not looking to having Mahomes 3rd year in the league with a worse defense than this one.

You could be in a situation where you don't have Ford, you don't have Houston and maybe don't have a replacement corner.

I'm not excited about watching Speaks rush the passer 30 times per game.

I'm all about them looking towards the future, but if you are making moves in 2018 that will effect 2022, well, I don't think that's right.
I'm aware. Like I said - I just have a philosophical disagreement with several here.

I have, for years, said that 3 years is an eternity in the NFL and if you can't turn a team around in that time, you're not the man for the job. I believe 90% of the time that's the correct outlook.

The other 10% of the time is one you have one of the best young quarterbacks to EVER play this game on your roster. We are in such an outlier spot here. This isn't even Russell Wilson, IMO. This is a guy who has a chance to be mentioned among the 5 greatest passers of all time. This is a guy who's talent is such that it just changes everything.

So in this instance, precisely because of one thunderbolt of an event, my philosophy is different than it would be in virtually every other instance.

I get it - not everyone's gonna agree with me here. But I've used this phrase before and I mean it - the Chiefs are stewards of one of the most incredible players to come along in decades. Everything they do has to be with an eye on his entire career and not just some lunatic dash to win a championship over the next 3 seasons.

Fine.

But with the NFL being what it is and the way it's set up, I just don't know that you can do that. I'm also willing to bet Mahomes comes to earth a little at some point, just because Chiefs.

I also get it. But I also feel that doing it the way you are saying here is how you end up with the Aaron Rodgers type career where you're always looking to the future and the long haul and forget that at some point, you've gotta just do it and win it a few times.

And I see looking at it the way you are as the way you end up with Wilson's future where you win one and then don't win much of anything for a long time.

Meanwhile, give me Rodgers with a smarter coach than McCarthy and less of an asshole streak as a leader and I'll give you more than the 1 SB that Rodgers won. I think Wilson's outcome was pretty much the best case scenario for what the Seahawks did. Meanwhile I see Rodgers career as damn near the worst case for what the path the Packers chose.

When the best case for Plan A is arguably no better than the worst case for Plan B - well seems like Plan B is the way to go, no?

Possible, but in Wilson's situation, I think we can acknowledge that they should have pretty easily had 2 SB's.

I get your thinking, I agree with it. But if the Chiefs can give me 2 SB"s in the next 4 years, I'll deal with the rest later.

Theres a saying in golf …

"You can't birdie them all without birdieing the first"

I think that kind of applies here. I love Pat and I'm on board with DJ. But we need to win the first SB before we get into this kind of dynastic frenzy. This is still the Chiefs were talking about.

This isn't MLB, where a small market team has a tiny window in which to win.
