When I was in high school, I was a checker at Safeway. I earned $3.85 an hour (which I thought was pretty good back then) but the senior checkers earned at much as $17.00 dollars an hour. They often worked overtime to earn more than $25 dollar an hour and the full timers (I was part time) had excellent health insurance benefits.
I thought it was pretty cool that people could earn more than $30k a year, in 1983, for being a checker, but all of those people owned homes in the Shawnee and Lenexa area, raised kids and were good people. There was a time in this country where fairly smart people who didn't have a college education could still lead a normal life. Those times are over and there's no one else to blame than corporate greed, investors and Wall Street. |

It sounds like there's a lot of support for raising the minimum wage.
I would support it as well. I'm not sure if that's a $15 wage or something higher or lower, but I think it needs to be raised.

I wouldn't work at a McDonalds for $20 an hour.

I'm sitting in a hotel room out of town at orientation for my new job.......I'm going in first thing in the morning and demanding more compensation if minimum wage goes up to 15 an hour
Wish me luck.

I hate the idea that the government will have to force this eventually.

You just need a fundamental understanding of supply and demand. What happens when the price of something goes up? Demand decreases. What happens when demand decreases? Price decrease. Something is only worth what the purchaser will pay for it. No one is going to pay double for a cheeseburger just because the minimum wage went up. /you also are calculated the increase in goods and services sold from increased wages in your calculations.
