Jon Gruden signs 10-year $100M deal to be Raiders HC

Raiders are giving new head coach Jon Gruden a 10-year contract, the longest coaching deal in NFL history, sources tell ESPN. The deal is likely to be worth about $100 million. - @AdamSchefter

Yeah, but has been secretly scouting NFL teams for those years disguised as a reporter. Learning each team's lingo, touring their facilities, planting bugs...

Topping BB and the Patriots along the way.

Nice work Raiders, nice work.

But the point is that he built a team that got to the SB and took another one to the SB. He also probably would have taken the Raiders to another SB had it not been for the tuck rule game, which to me was a screw job to the Raiders. Not that I minded. The point was that he was a good coach. Can he still do that? Who knows? I guess we will see.

He wasn't the wildly successful destroyer of worlds that time has painted him as. He had some good years and some pretty bad ones. He took over a team that was SB ready, beat his old squad because he knew their plays and then proceeded to turn that team into a .500 squad.

He never took over woebegone squads and yet went to the playoffs all of 5 times in 11 years. Andy's gone 12 times in 19 and 4 times in 5 despite taking over far worse franchises both times.

He's an 'offensive guru' who's teams in TB were never in the top half of the league in points (never a single time) despite having his fingerprints all over them over the latter part of his run there.

He's fine. He's not a bad coach (Vance Joseph...HA!), but I wouldn't go so far as to say he's a particularly good one. I'd rather have Andy and by a fair amount. And he's been in a broadcast booth for a decade or so - that's a tough ask for him to just show up ready for the grind and with the energy he had 10 years ago.

But hey, to each their own. The guy may be Vermiel part 2 and be a problem. But I'm not going to worry too much about it either way - there's no assurances that he will and we have a new hotness coming in under center. I'm not going to lose sleep over the possibility that Gruden is as much steak as sizzle. His history suggests he probably isn't.
While I agree with most of your post, I think you're forgetting that he turned around a Raiders team that was 4-12 the season before his arrival. And in Tampa, his QB was Brad Johnson. So, I'd cut him a little slack there. Yeah, I don't think he's a great coach, either. But I think a lot of folks in this thread are selling him a little short.

I don't get the hate. I honestly don't. Maybe I haven't seen enough games that he announces. Tell me why you don't like him.

Why does he get a pass for his mediocre record in Tampa Bay just because of Brad Johnson? He didn't have the clout to go out and get a better QB?

Gruden's best years were working with vet laden teams of guys who knew what they were doing, that is completely not what today's NFL is.

Yeah, they were 4-12. But they were 4-12 with Joe Bugel and Jeff George. Virtually all the rest of their talent was the same from the prior years when they were just a firmly 'meh' squad; lots of .500 kind of seasons in there.

I just don't feel like that team was quite as bad as the record they had. I guess the same argument can be made for the team Andy took over in KC but they were a pretty forgettable team the years prior as well, with the blip being the one playoff year.
