Playing around with the idea of trading for Josh Gordon.

This is a good offense right now, all things considered. To make it Super Bowl caliber, OldSchool suggested in DraftPlanet that we should trade this year's 1st and 3rd for Josh Gordon.

Let's play around with that idea, because I find it fascinating.

Scenario A

We trade for Josh Gordon at the end of the season for that pricetag.

The remaining year (2015) on his rookie contract is $5m.

The Chiefs are almost certainly cutting Hali, Sean Smith, Anthony Fasano, Derrick Johnson, and probably cutting (in this scenario) Donnie Avery and Mike DeVito. Those cuts score us ~29m. $12m of that gets swallowed up by franchising Justin Houston, and $5m of that is spent on Josh Gordon.

Those moves leave us with Josh Gordon and $12m in cap space. We use the remaining $12m on tying up Hudson, Bailey, and our draft picks.

That makes our offense incredible:

QB: Smith
RB: Charles, Davis, DAT
WR: Gordon, Bowe
TE: Kelce

Super Bowl caliber.

But it happens at the expense of our defense, because we will have lost a starting CB on an already-thin CB corps, and who knows if Dee Ford can adequately replace Hali. And our highest draft pick is a 2nd rounder.

Scenario B

So what if, instead of cutting Hali and keeping Bowe, we cut Bowe (as I understand it, which isn't saying much, that would save us his entire contract since none of it is guaranteed anymore, right?) and keep Hali. We'd keep Avery, of course, in that circumstance. And all our other personnel moves are the same from Scenario A.

That would give us an all-things-considered better offense, because Gordon is a true #1, rather than the decent #1 that Bowe is:

QB: Smith
RB: Charles, Davis, DAT
WR: Gordon, Avery
TE: Kelce

And we retain the Hali/Houston passrush with Poe up the gut, and Dee Ford as quality depth at OLB. We still need that 2nd CB, but we do have plenty of draft picks and, who the hell knows, maybe Gaines or Parker develops.

Which scenario seems the most appealing?

Rest assured, you'd do the exact same thing he's about to do this offseason if you were in his shoes.

Dorsey isn't going to keep Hali at that price, not with Houston's deal looming next season and especially not if we have to tag Houston.

Haaaaaa.... fair enough. Glad I don't have to make the call on moving on from Tamba. Lots of season to go that may make such decisions easier anyway.

Why would cleveland trade him when they can probably only get a 2nd or 3rd for him? They benefit much more by keeping him.

And the last thing this offense needs is a shiny toy at the wide receiver position. There's 2 problems with it:

1. This offense has a potentially great thing going with these 2 and 3 tight end formations - that type of O doesn't really need nor utilize much in the way of elite receivers.

2. Alex Suck can't optimally use a receiver anyhow. He's not accurate down the field and prefers throwing to bigger tight ends over the middle.

IMO the offense would be better off finding another good toy at the tight end position to pair with Kelce

Do any of you guys actually think Gordon is going to be able to keep himself clear of the substance abuse policy for any length of time? Something he has never been able to accomplish since college?

He is out of the league in less than 2 years. Don't waste the draft picks or the money.

Hali might not demand a 15 mil per year cap hit.

Osi Umenyiora 2 years 8.5 mil deal.

Demarcus Ware has a hit of 9.6 and 8.6 per year the first two years of his three year deal.

Jared Allen is only 3 mil this year and a 12.5 hit next. If you split that evenly over two years it isn't that bad.

I cant yet buy into the idea of cutting Bowe, but he needs to really pick it up from here to the finish line, and even if he stays... he needs to be #2, period.

Gordon? I'm leaning towards Bufkins assessment of "ticking time bomb".

I like you are respect you. So with all do respect, Josh has kept himself clean. The test he is suspended for under the current deal he wouldn't of been suspended for and his previous failed test was for dr prescribed codeine.

I'm just glad the browns will never trade him

Hm. That's a fun idea, too.

Blackmon would also cost a shit ton less.

I think the Jags are committed to keeping him on board, however.

Ware's really the only comparable talent, here. Osi's done, and Allen's a 4-3 DE.

Ware and Hali are in comparable parts of their careers, too. So yeah, maybe it's possible the Chiefs could work out a cheaper deal...
