Kansas City Chiefs exercise Dontari Poe's 2016 option

The Kansas Chiefs will have two-time Pro Bowl nose tackle Dontari Poe under team control through at least 2016.


The Chiefs exercised the fifth-year option on Poe's rookie contract, reported NFL Media's Albert Breer on Friday.

Poe will earn $6.146 million for the 2016 season.

The move comes as no surprise. Poe has been everything the Chiefs could have hoped for after they rejected a pair of opportunities to trade out of the No. 11 spot in the 2012 draft.

A freakish talent at 6-foot-4 and nearly 350 pounds, Poe boasts a rare combination of power and athleticism. The former Memphis star has been one of the NFL's most effective interior pocket pushers over the past two years.

"It's like going up against a monster," 49ers guard Alex Boone once said of facing Poe. "He's a beast. He hit me with a fake inside-outside club, never seen anything like it."

That monster will be anchoring Kansas City's frontline for at least two more seasons.

I still remember the day Poe was picked and Big Al Williams of 104.3 The Fan(former DE of the Bengals,9ners and Broncos) out here in Denver just laughing his arse off for the rest of the show making fun of Crennel and the Chiefs for making this pick. So I just sent Al this link and asked him, "Who got the last laugh Al ???
