Frederick Douglass was a boss. Runaway slave, taught himself to read and write. Ended up a prominent historical figure.

As many have said, a ton of them. Most of mine would center around WWII and the cold war that followed.
Jesus Churchill Roosevelt Wilson Patton Rommel (sp) Kennedy Monroe Thatcher Regan A ton of others, but that probably catches the biggies for me. Last edited by Over Yonder; 08-11-2015 at 01:19 AM.. Reason: Spelling |

Yes. I'm uncertain if he holds the record single-handedly, but if you include the conquests of his sons and grandsons, the Mongolians were the greatest conquerors in human history by any measure (whether you want to count square miles, or countries/nations conquered, or simply number of people conquered). Keep in mind, however, that Genghis Khan (a title, real name Temujin) had to conquer MONGOLIA, which during his youth and young adult years were basically nomadic bands. The best analogy I can give for what Genghis Khan did is to picture American Indians. Genghis becomes the leader of, whichever -- the Cherokee -- and then he unites all the various Indian tribes under his banners, and then he goes and conquers everything from China to Hungary. It's basically completely ridiculous. And forget that "hordes" shit. They didn't conquer with overwhelming numbers. They were often outnumbered in their battles, but they used superior military tactics, speed/maneuverability of their sturdy horses, and one of the greatest military techologies in the ancient world, the recurved bow, to conquer all. More in a subsequent post...

That's right, largest by square footage. And, of course, "the sun never set on the British Empire", given their worldwide locations. It's an interesting point -- I've seen that quote about the Mongol empire -- greatest conquerors no matter how you count -- several times. I'm not certain if they are suggesting the British empire wasn't necessarily all acquired "via conquest" or what.

Correct. The concept of "mongol hordes" is vastly overdone. Anyone who knows anything about the Middle Ages knows about the English longbow, but not many know about the Mongolian recurved bow. Able to be shot from horseback, it had amazing penetrating power plus flexibility. The English longbow was great, but it wouldn't have worked as well in the vast steppes, plains and open spaces of Asia.

I can go on and on about the MOngols (obviously), but I will stop with this last little factoid.
The First Crusade was in 1096. The Eighth and Ninth Crusades were in the late 1200s. Each Crusade involved (to greater or lesser degrees), vast efforts by Europe to reconquer the Holy Land, and not-infrquently involved Kings of serious countries (France etc.) leading Europe's armies against the Muslim infidels. Their success was relatively small. The areas they conquered are parts of what are now Israel, Syria, etc. The greatest city in the world at this time, by most measures, was probably Baghdad, with a population of nearly one million. In the 1200s, the Mongols came through and conquered everybody that had ever opposed the Crusaders, really. They didn't go south into the holy land itself, but they besieged and crushed Baghdad in the 1250s, and swept right on through what is now Turkey. They also went north, around the Black Sea, and conquered most of what is now southern Russia and the entire Ukraine, and then into Poland. Where the combined (sort of) efforts of Europe had barely made a dent against the Muslims, the Mongols just smoked 'em.
