Plaza Teens - Trendsetting - Putting 'em in a Coffin

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
Several teens were arrested after police say they damaged at least three vehicles on the County Club Plaza.

Problems with youth traditionally have been a problem at the Country Club Plaza in warmer months when school is out, but issues are again flaring up.

Police Chief Darryl Forte said the issue is one for the community but said he is working to complete a plan to deal with the issues. He said he will then share the plan with stakeholders and hopes to get wrapped up by the middle of the week.

What they are accused of doing is a dangerous prank that has become a growing trend across social media. "Putting 'em in a coffin" is a phrase describing pranksters who jump back-first onto cars, emulating a coffin.

Besides damaging vehicles during the prank, teens have also been seen online dropping their body weight on store displays and landscaping.

Kansas City Police Chief Darryl Forte said in a tweet a little after 3 a.m. Sunday that there was heavy police presence in the popular shopping district and the teens still thought they could get away with destruction of property. Police have not said what time the incident actually happened.

Forte said officers even observed the teens standing on the hood of vehicles. A person in the group even posted a video of the alleged crime on Facebook.

"The juveniles were arrested for breaking the law. Once again I'll share that arrests are made based on behavior and nothing else," Forte tweeted.

No injuries have been reported.

The Kansas City Police Department declined KCTV5 News' request for comment on the incident. However, Forte told KCTV5 that officers "continue to engage at the level necessary to prevent crime and to keep everyone safe."

Forte also said officers will continue to focus on the disobedient.

"I've practiced this approach since I was appointed," he said.

KCTV5 has reached out to Kansas City Mayor Sly James and have not heard back for a comment.

The fact that you think it is unusual for the average teenager to not engage in activities that damage other people's property says a lot about you.

i did a shit load of things that i would never type out here.
and im sure people and their lives got hurt, but they all probably deserved it, they knew what they were getting into and made a decision to put themselves in that position.

there is a difference in doing shit and tearing up some random person's stuff.

My friends and I used to sneak into our neighbors' yards and mow them while they were at work. It was hilarious watching them get all confused when they got home and couldn't figure out what had happened.

We were always up to some crazy hijinks.

Now that's a great prank.

Did you ever intentionally destroy some random stranger's property?

I did two destructive things as a kid, never older than 14...

1) two buds and I kicked out the ground mounted spotlights that lit up the sign for a local old folks home. once

2) used to throw smaller type rocks at cars, not even big enough to break a window or anything... but still, usually picked younger, tougher looking guys that looked like they'd get mad enough to get out and give chase.... that's pretty much what we called it "get a chase going".

Deserved to have my narrow ass beat for it, too... so I wont be too hard on these idiots, but yeah... just jumping on shit? kinda pointless and stupid.

When I was a kid, stealing hood ornaments was the big thing. I can honestly say I never participated in that fad, but I'd much rather have someone jump on my hood than steal a hood ornament. I don't think jumping on a hood is anything that can't be fixed with a mallet.

The worst act of vandalism and general stupidity that I did was tearing through a neighborhood adjacent to the one I lived in with a friend of mine hanging out of the car window with a baseball bat, randomly stopping by mailboxes so he could clobber them. We were both drunk and I was driving an easily recognizable red 1974 GTO with a primered roof...no idea how we didn't get caught for it.
