Bob Sutton has gifted us with the best third-down defense in football

Now he just has to figure out first and second down.

Sutton does not know how to defend a simple screen pass-ever. the biggest plays this year against us have been screen passes. If it is just talent, it is Grandpa Bob's job to sit / cut players and move the next man up.
The Rams play that kind of zone defense all the time.

If we had the Rams defensive line, it would actually WORK.

Seriously, watch a few games besides the Chiefs. You'll see the same drop 8 protect coverage in every game, from every team. The difference is talent.

And you can't assume that Sutton can just sit players. He certainly can't cut them - that is Veach's job. The next man up might actually be WORSE. You're blaming Sutton for something over which he has ZERO control. Andy Reid is the head coach and Brett Veach is the GM. If there's a talent issue, THEY have to fix it.

I agree with what you are saying, yes Murray and a few others should not be out there. Veech has dropped the ball on this secondary.

So when the 49ers had 3rd and long on us- they lined up on the first down marker attempting to keep it all in front. They blitzed or rushed 5 to take away Mahomes time back there and they shut us down several times with that strategy. Yes, Mahomes burned them too because he has a huge arm.

Sutton didn't defend the line of scrimmage like that at all. Face it, we are dead last in points allowed and giving up yards at a record pace. Sutton deserves to shoulder this- it is his job!

Actually, the DPI in the end zone that gave the Chiefs the ball at the 1 was exactly this kind of play and the 49ers let a Chiefs receiver get behind them, so they had to hold.

That's a player issue, not a coaching issue. Every coach on that sideline said "don't let anybody get behind you" and that's exactly what the players went ahead and did. The game announcers even said as much, they saw it too.

When it's 3rd and 25, you don't freaking blitz. You drop 7 or 8 and keep everything in front of you. You depend on your PAID PROFESSIONALS to do their jobs.

We're just going to have to agree to disagree because there's zero chance of convincing me otherwise. I know what I'm seeing and it's not scheme, it's talent.

I hope they do. Then this discussion can be over.

Of course, then you'll have to find another scapegoat because this defense isn't going to improve with the current crap personnel.

Is it not possible Sutton and the players suck? that's what I'm sticking with.

It doesn't have to improve much, like mad dog radio said today "there is no way Sutton can survive with these passive defensive calls, even the 49ers backup threw for a td if not for a phantom penalty."

Well, there's the fact that with Houston and Berry in their prime and Dontari Poe in the middle, this defense was one of the best in the league. 3 years in a row even.

There's just no evidence to suggest that Sutton is the problem over personnel. The only prudent course of action at this point is to try and fix the personnel because we absolutely know it's an issue.

If, at that point, Sutton still is an issue, then fire him. But firing him now and doing nothing about the personnel is absolutely 100% guaranteed to fail.

First of all, every team in the league runs passive defensive calls in long yardage situation. Sutton isn't unique.

Second, that wasn't a phantom call. #44 was blocking downfield before the ball was thrown.

Mad Dog Radio sounds like a great source for quality football takes.

Sutton misses Poe badly. That’s what made his scheme work.

Except Gunther never had NEAR the success that Sutton did.

Heck, Gunther never had the success DAVE ADOLPH did and everybody hates Dave Adolph.

Bob Sutton's Hot Seat: Week 3
"Last week after the Chiefs finally ended their drought against the Steelers in Week 2, we raised the temperature on Bob Sutton’s Hot Seat meter to SUN BURNT in reaction to Sutton constantly only sending three rushers and generating almost no pass rush. That was not the case on Sunday. Hot Seat meter is going back down to the GETTING HOT level."

Ht, you're about the ONLY one left that doesn't see the writing on the wall!
