As for opioids, we just did a focus group study with doctors (not directly aimed at opioids), and the biggest issue they mentioned with the opioid issue is that there's no way to keep track of the prescriptions a person has from different doctors. It's not uncommon at all for someone to have a major injury that requires multiple specialists, and all of them end up prescribing pain meds. That gets out of hand real quick.

No offense, but however you want to characterize it's effect, it's far less successful at providing comfort than prescription pain meds.

Anyone who finds marijuana effective at relieving their pain (or making them care about it enough less that it isn't an issue), hasn't experienced real pain.

I doubt an ethical doctor is trying to get anyone hooked. However, I think some are pretty careless with prescriptions.

In September of 2003, I had a serious bullriding wreck that almost killed me. I spent time in the Ft. Worth hospital and was given pain meds. The meds made me sick so I said that I'd just tough it out and deal with the pain. I was released from the hospital two weeks later and the doctor gave me a prescription for pain killers that was refillable for the next YEAR. I told him I didn't need it, but he insisted. I got one prescription filled and it's still in a drawer in the bathroom completely full.

I have no doubt that that's the case. I just don't know how careful (as opposed to careless) I want doctors to be. I don't want a system where people who are in legitimate pain have to beg an unnecessarily skeptical doctor for pain meds over and over again to get the relief they need.

Congrats on being a responsible (non)user, too.

My sister had a pretty bad run with pain pills. We found out she'd been seeing anywhere from 10-12 doctors at a time, driving to at least 3 other states we know of, collecting scripts. And there was surprisingly little connection or communication between any of it. It went on for years before it ever caught up with her. By that time, she was simply buying it from other people, or writing her own scripts(She somehow managed to steal several script pads too). The addiction is crazy, I've seen it destroy several people I know.

There are ways to monitor prescription drug use. In fact, most states have a prescription drug monitoring. It doesn't work if someone is crossing state lines, but a national database would enable such tracking.

It absolutely does relieve pain. When activated, the CB1 receptor provides pain relief, and cannabis also acts as an allosteric modulator of the mu and kappa opioid receptors, both of which provide analgesia.

Sorry, I do not defer to you, Mr. Pharmacy Student. If you took what I wrote to mean that pot can't have any relief effect on pain at all, you misinterpreted me (and I can see that if taken alone, one of those sentences sounds like I'm saying that). My position is that it's not nearly as effective for most types of serious pain and I stand by that.

No, you're an expert because you're on the Internet and you can panic Google to support your dumbshit assertions.

You claim to know what real pain is and isn't, and that someone who achieves relief with cannabis doesn't have "real pain". You can't make that claim without experiencing someone else's pain. It's ignorant.

Furthermore, you have no scientific knowledge to support your inference. You don't know the mechanism of action of the drugs in question, nor can you speak to their efficacy.

In short, shut up, because you're talking out of your ass.

Get bent, blowhard. I think you're projecting your own ignorance here. I hadn't taken you for a NORML-style miracle weed nut, but maybe you are. You certainly aren't going to show me any scientific studies demonstrating equivalent effectiveness so take your "scientific knowledge" handwaving somewhere else.

Missouri has no such system

Right, but I can buy that opioids are BETTER purely for the level of pain relief. It's all the other side effects that make them less beneficial.

(I admittedly haven't ever had a significant pain issue nor used opioids though.)
