Da'Rick Rodgers Released

Chiefs release WR Da'Rick Rogers
Adam Teicher, ESPN Staff Writer

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Talented but troubled wide receiver Da'Rick Rogers was released by the Kansas City Chiefs just hours before they were to begin their mandatory minicamp. Da'Rick Rogers has caught only 14 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns during his NFL career.

Rogers, 23, was one of the SEC's best wide receivers in 2011, when he caught 67 passes for more than 1,000 yards and scored nine touchdowns for Tennessee. But he was subsequently thrown off the team for disciplinary problems and transferred to Tennessee Tech.

Rogers has been unable to make it in the NFL. He signed with the Chiefs, his third NFL team, in January but hadn't been impressive during offseason practice. The Chiefs also may have felt comfortable releasing Rogers because of the emergence of rookie wide receiver Chris Conley, who has played well in practice.

Rogers pleaded guilty in May in Indianapolis to resolve a 2014 DUI case. He was sentenced to one day in jail and six months of probation.

The Chiefs also released offensive lineman Kelvin Palmer, who recently signed as a free agent, and signed offensive lineman Tavon Rooks of Kansas State.

You do realize it takes more than a day for WR's to be understand Andy's system right?

Might would expect Maclin, Conley and Wilson to be the starters after the first month or so. And even though I think Conley will ball out, I still expectAndy to ease him in at first.

You're expecting those 3 to come out and start running all kinds of routes and obliterating everyone opening day?

Beats it to waste of space chase Daniel who has and will contribute nothing. Hates avant. Who helps young guys, has more time in the system than our other guys combined, and is steady.

Seems legit.

If you had said Wilson or DAT or Maclin or Kelce or Conley, it would be difficult to argue. But with all that speed on the roster, plus Charles in the backfield, why in the world would Avant, the slowest non-lineman on the roster, get downfield 10 yards to make the catch?

Is there something special about being slow and old versus young and fast?

A WR's primary objective is still to catch the football.

He's a possession receiver.

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

Why not?

Seems every year it's the same ol "takes a while to get up to par" crap for the chiefs offense.

It's year 3 in the same system. I expect the offense to shit or get off the pot

He's an old **** that peaked five seasons ago and even then, it wasn't very impressive (679 yards).

And FWIW, every receiver should be a possession receiver.

Possession receiver is the PC name they give receivers who aren't very good. EVERY receiver is a possession receiver.

Except that the old, slow and non-explosive ones get called "possession" receivers.

I make this point, because basically, he shouldn't be on the field. Ever. Which means you're keeping him as a cheerleader...err coach.

Or is everyone convinced that in a 3rd and 10 situation, the Chiefs should be looking at Avant over Maclin, Kelce, Charles, Wilson, DAT and Conley?

What makes Avant a possession receiver and those guys not?

I've tried explaining this the first time i entered the thread. "Possession" receiver is such a stupid concept.

Should. We saw last year that wasn't the case here.

In all honesty we only added one legit WR this offseason. Conley has all the potential in the world but he's still an unproven rookie. Everyone else was part of the suck of last year...

Again, the only rookie is Conley. We're keeping Avant just to teach Conley?

DAT, Wilson...2nd year in this offense....surely, by now they have a decent understanding of this offense. Hemingway, Hammond....3rd year....Maclin has how many years?

Why is everyone acting like these receivers have no experience in Reid's system?

Avant isn't immune to dropping the ball either.....point being again, that he shouldn't even see the field, nor should he be having his name called in any sort of crucial situation.
