News video: Drunk Driver hits KCMO police car

KANSAS CITY, MO. - Police have released dash cam video of an accident that injured two officers at the intersection of Gregory and 71 Hwy in Kansas City, Mo. Police said the officers were responding to an emergency call when their car was hit by a 27-year-old female driver.

She is expected to face charges of DUI and driving with a suspended license. The two police officers hurt in the crash are expected to recover from their injuries.

"Their lights and siren were working," Darin Snapp with KCMO police said. "As they were going through the intersection of Gregory and 71 Highway, their light was turning red. It's obvious on the dashcam video that they brake, making sure the vehicles were going to stop for them. They noticed all vehicles were stopped. When they went through the intersection, one vehicle on the outside lane actually proceeded through and struck their vehicle."

Both officers were trapped inside their car and had to be rescued. The other driver was not injured, but police arrested her and said she was driving on a suspended license, and failed a sobriety test.

"The officers were extremely lucky it wasn't a t-bone type of accident or something like that, the officers would be facing a lot more severe injuries I'm sure," Snapp said.

Police say in the summer with windows rolled up and air conditioners and radios making noise, it sometimes can be hard to hear sirens. But in this case, every other vehicle stopped for the patrol car, except one.
