Ten Things About Today’s Game
Week 14: KC 26 OAK 15

10. Yesterday was one of my favorite days of the entire year. The lovely Mrs. Blowfish has directed a free Children’s Christmas Play In Lexington for 26 straight years now. The little kids get to see Santa, we give all the kids a nice big bag of candy and have multiple drawings for toys and children’s books. I’ve had mothers tell me that some of these kids are so poor, the candy and toys they get from us may be all they get for Christmas, period. When you see something like that, it makes football seem totally irrelevant. So this morning I had some Joe in my lucky Chiefs mug, put out the Chiefs Flag on the front porch, checked the weather -which was fabulous for December- and headed out for Arrowhead. Seemed like the Faid fans had all the good parking places, because when you worship Satan, you’re not slowed down by attending church before leaving for the game. I had a very calm, matter of fact feeling about this game. I knew if we played like crap and lost, the playoffs were a pipe dream. If we played like crap and lost, we didn’t deserve to go to the playoffs anyway. What we got was what I’ve been looking for the last six weeks; a game where both sides of the ball actually showed up and played good enough to win on the same day. It was great to build a 26-0 lead going into the fourth quarter, and have enough points where the Faid could only see our tail lights. Many might say this was a bad team losing to a worse team, and that may be true. Not allowing an Oakland season sweep was the key, and Andy has never lost to the Faid in Arrowhead. Great job keeping that streak intact.

9. I also noticed from my sideline perch that all the players seemed much more engaged and motivated. Maybe the whole Peters fiasco got their attention, with the feeling being its up to the rest of the team to step up and will the team to victory. Alex Smith was much more involved with his team mates. He actually interacted with both offensive and defensive players. Albert Wilson was into it the whole game. Everyone just seemed to be wide awake and ready to play today. The thing that kept running through my mind was, “how could this team have possibly played so flat and uninspired against Buffalo?” It's just hard to understand.

8. Chris Jones came to play, especially early on. He had the first sack on Carr to set the tone, and tipped Carr’s arm to cause Mitchell’s pick that snuffed the Faid’s only real drive in the first half. The defensive secondary played well enough to keep Gaines on the sidelines and hold the Faid scoreless until the fourth quarter. Terrence Williams looked more like Peters than Peters with his pick and tight coverage. Cooper did not have a catch. Crabtree was held without a touchdown. Nelson ripped a ball loose from Holton -just like Peters is known to do- that Zombo recovered. The Faid didn’t start looking to Cook their Tight End until much too late in the contest to do any good. Cook made Sorensen look terrible on the Oakland’s final TD, but by that point in the game, it was too late for the Faid to do much to catch up.

7. Justin Houston and DJ played much better this week. Houston had a sack, and was involved in enough plays to hurry throws or help stop runs. Ragland was tough on Beast Mode, who only broke two decent runs -one in the first half and one in the second half for a TD. He was held to 61 total yards, and Oakland had less than 100 rushing yards for the game. DJ’s been held out for more and more plays as the season has gone along. He did come up and make a couple of very nice stops, but Sutton is starting to use him a lot like Hali, only on a limited number of snaps. Revis held down his side well, and didn’t have any giant olé tackles like he had last week. Jenkins had three tackles including a sack, which was his best performance of the season. The D held the Raiders to only 5 for 13 on third down, and forced Oakland to punt seven times. Chiefs didn’t punt until late in the third quarter.

6. If you have Kelce in your fantasy league, you got screwed as he had two TDs called back. One for a knee down at the one on the first, another called back on penalty. Kelce did have seven catches for 75 yards, which was equal to Cook’s production for the Raiders. Harris had a nice catch and run in the first half, and should have had a TD in the second half, but his stone hands cost him six. Albert Wilson came up big with a nice sideline catch for 36 yards and a clutch third down catch in the fourth quarter to allow the offense to burn valuable clock down the stretch. Ty Hill caught a 46 yard under thrown bomb. He’s learned that on a lot of Alex throws, you have to wait for the ball. He pulled it out of the sunshine glare and made the play.

5. Alex had one bad pick -turning over Zombo’s fumble recovery literally on the next play with a bad throw down the middle of the field somewhat aimed at Kelce. He had no TDs today, which is a little concerning as we look towards playoff time. Chiefs settled for four field goals or we could have blown Oakland completely off the field. A 26-zip lead seems pretty safe, unless you remember what Andy’s defense did in the Playoffs against Andrew Luck a few years ago. Today, it was good enough. Alex ran five times for 24 yards, but was also sacked four times. A couple of those sacks were his own fault for not getting rid of the football.

4. O-Line did a much better job of opening holes for K-Hunt, who tied Joe Delaney for most 100 yard games as a Chief’s rookie running back -five so far. If he has another 100 yard game this year he’ll own the record. He also went over 1000 yards for the season, which is absolutely great. He had a TD -Kelce’s TD from the knee hitting on the one- but it was his first rushing TD in ten games. West had a tough run to score his TD in the third quarter. The Canadian Doc was bulldozing out there today. We didn’t miss Mitch Morse at all, which was surprising. Fisher got beat a couple times, but all in all he played OK. Chiefs and Raiders both had seven penalties, so that was about even as far as the Zebras contribution.

3. I am still worried about the slippage in play by our special teams this season. Dave Toub is supposed to be this big guru. There’s been too many times we’ve run kickoffs out to inside our own 15 yard line. That didn’t happen today, but we did give up a partially blocked punt, had a holding penalty on our first punt return and gave up an onside kick recovery. On the flip side, Buttkicker was money again this week going four for four including a 53 yarder on a windy day. It was nice to give Oakland the Sea-Bass Treatment to see how they like it. Buttkicker has been putting his kickoffs into the cheap seats, preventing returns. That’s been big too. If K-Hunt doesn’t win the Mack Lee Hill Award, Buttkicker surely will.

2. So Andy gets the team back on the beam, with a short week to get ready for Phyllis, who destroyed Washington today. He threw for 319 and two TDs against the Redskins, who we had trouble with back early in the season. Chargers have KC, the Jets and Oakland left on their schedule. Hopefully Peters will return with his mind back on football, and be ready to defense Phyllis.

1. Every team in the division won today except Oakland. Even Denver won by shutting out the Jets, which made me throw up in my mouth a little after last week. Going into Saturday night, it’s basically today all over again. Win, and we’ve got a good shot at taking the AFC West. Lose, and we’re probably out of the playoff hunt. If we can’t beat Phyllis at home, we don’t deserve the playoffs anyway. It’s liberating to know it’s put up or shut up time. I put up our Christmas Wreath tonight when I got home from the game.

Hopefully next Saturday Night if Santa Claus comes right down Santa Claus lane, Sorenson will track him and deck him. The middle has been wide open too often on fourth down.

A win over the Raiders is always a good thing.

Have you noticed how mahomes stands pretty far behind the qb oon three sideline and watches every play unfold, when both offenses are on the field. Tyler bray was with him some, kelce was with him a lot when the raiders were on offense. Houston and DJ quite a bit when we were on offense.

Nice write up

Here's what I like going forward.

Though we will all speculate, Peters benching seemed to have it's effect. Whether it was his own actions, or as a vehicle to send a message to the team, it seemed to work. Mitch mentioned in post game the Reid challenged the players. Secondary played really well. Which leads to

Reid leading the team by example, bu giving up his play calling duties....After the eleventy billion "It starts with me" PC, he delivered. Which leads to

Nagy's play calling. HUGE overall improvement. Plays getting off with 15 seconds on the play clock..good tempo...which leads to

Hunt grabbing a cnote today...play action and deep throws.

Hunt said in post game they were approaching the remainder as playoffs games.

I'm only optimistic because of the strong start.. they've got the potential, they just need to execute. This win will be a huge bump at a much needed time.

Last two years, Chiefs are 7-1 in December. Chance to get hot at the right time.

Berry gave the pregame speech, also heard he was trailing Kelce after the drop.
