What are you going to argue with? What exactly did Goodell do to promote player safety? He did the same shit he does with every solution. Fine people who contribute to the problem, inconsistently enforce those rules, and then fall into the fetal position when retired players attack you asking for better retirement benefits.
I would hope that a leader that gets paid as much as Goodell does can find a more creative solution than trying to penalize people every time he wants to fix a problem. That seems to be his only solution for anything. I would hope that a leader in that position of power wouldn't look like such a lightweight when the big dogs go after him. If he's truly a shill for the owners, as you claim, he's in a position to attack the NFLPA. He seems to lose every battle with them because he has no idea what the **** he is doing. |

I still say if you want to cut down on the injuries limit the size of players. If your over say 300 pounds you can't play.

I think the biggest problems are actually off the field.
1. Contracts must be flat-fee, per year constant value contracts, to keep teams like the Broncos from cheating. 2. Ditch that stupid Together We Make Football contest because it's an amateur display of public relations blunders that makes the league look terrible. 3. Loosen up the defensive backfield rules. Keep the defenseless hit stuff if necessary, but allow enough contact to restore a run/pass balance. I tend to think that runs produce less severe injuries anyway. 4. No more selling naming rights to stadiums. 5. The Super Bowl rotates between NFL cities, and once every 32 years it's held in a random U.S. city that doesn't have an NFL team. I have a bigger agenda, but I have to remember what it is.

If you're going to enforce rules, enforce them consistently. It's almost like they pick punishments out of a hat. The enforcement is a huge joke. There are plenty of manufacturers out there who are testing safer equipment options. Many would argue that getting rid of hard facemasks is one way. Goodell has yet to mandate wearing mouthguards which is a simple solution toward reducing concussions. Hell, if you're worried about liability, create a concussion waiver system. If players are getting faster, then find ways to slow them down. And if we got back to teaching players how to tackle with their bodies instead of their shoulders, defenders would become better players. There are solutions out there. But that's not how Goodell works. Goodell likes to throw a bunch of shit at the wall and see what sticks instead of having a clear-cut plan. So what did Goodell do? He selectively enforces personal fouls with zero consistency whatsoever sometimes choosing to scapegoat instead of consistently enforcing the rules. No major equipment changes of note. And his method of punishment hasn't disincentivized behavior, just as his laughable personal conduct policy has made the problem even worse. His policy of putting concussion doctors on the sidelines added yet another element of subjectivity, and the Chiefs were a huge victim of that, as arguably those doctors' complete judgment calls may have cost them a playoff win. |

Nobody would fault David Stern or Paul Tagliabue for being a complete mouthpiece for ownership. Both those guys have to give in to the owners from time to time. But they also take firm stances when leadership is required, and at least their initiatives resemble a plan. They're not always right. They both made some dumb mistakes. But Goodell... can anyone name a single thing he has done right except to make more money for a sport that was wildly popular from the get-go?

Sure, "teaching" them how to tackle better. Because players always execute the way they are taught. If the league as a whole wants to curb a behavior...they penalize it. But you don't like that. |

In player conduct and reducing injury, Goodell's only solution has been penalizing players. Every time we need a solution, that's all Goodell's got. And none of it has worked. It's not just that the idea is stupid, it's the execution. |
