The 49ers have expressed to others that a deal for QB Alex Smith is effectively complete. Can't be finalized til league year begins 3/12

Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora

so it's not official, both clubs view it at as it's effectively done. I do not know the other team. KC and JAX are 2 teams that make sense

Possibly...I'm just saying you have to view his stats through a lens.

BTW...I'm not advocating a trade for Smith. What I'm saying is that KC shouldn't reach for a QB in round one. They should get SOMEONE to hold down that position and build up the team and get the BPA in round one.

Who knows...maybe you get lucky and Geno falls into a position to move up from your pick in round 2. Nobody saw Rodgers or Quinn falling that far.

Kaep has been able to suceed because the 49ers had already drafted Vernon Davis, Michael Crabtree, Mike Iupati, Joe Staley, and Anthony Davis.

I understand the KC QB history...and it much hurt....I'm just saying you don't do yourselves an favors by taking a guy who isn't worthy of that pick...you just compound the problem.

Everyone seems to love Kaep these days but he only threw 10 TDs in half a season.

The 49ers simply aren't going to throw the ball 30-40 times a game regardless of who is at QB. Alex was on Pace for 24TDs this season. If you want to look at a similar statline for a run first team....look at Troy Aikmans stats in the early 90's. People say you win in the air these days....but you might want to tell the two teams who went to the SB that.
Run first team.....lol.

You know what run first teams are? They're teams that have little faith in their QB.

Chiefs are a run first team too......

Misconception #2: It's all run, all the time.

This one gets repeated frequently by almost everybody. True, Frank Gore has had a resurgent season with an outstanding stretch of games, but the run game hasn't dominated the 49ers offense. Some interesting (at least to me) numbers:

Rushing plays--266
Passing plays--239
Sacks--23

This means that the 49ers ran the ball 266 times and attempted to pass the ball 262 times. That's the very definition of balanced.

Rushing yardage--1178
Passing yardage--1616

Again, refuting the idea that the 49ers offense is built around the run.

Rushing TDs--9
Passing TDs--11

Of course this doesn't tell us how the team got into scoring position, but it's another indicator that the 49ers aren't a run always, or even a run first team.

You can't compare draft positions of QB's before and after the new CBA. You're comparing apples and oranges.

Again...not trying to advocate Smith. I reponded back in this thread because I was talking about the concept of taking Geno at #1 over a LT.

I mentioned Smith simply because the Niners were ABLE to take Aldon high because they already had Smith and could then target Kaep in round 2.

It doesn't have to be Smith who you already have...but you will need someone. Taking that QB at #1 when he isn't worthy of the pick only compounds the issue.

So is he a reach if he turns out to be a franchise QB? The whole BPA thing is a great concept, when you're drafting in the 20's.

This bullshit reach philosophy is just that. If we were at 8, taking Geno would be a no brainer. But being at 1 is some ****ing magic carpet i guess.

If you show me this no brain pick at 1, I'll gladly take it. Who is it?

OK...now THAT'S reasonable.

You could be right....that cap $$$$ isn't as debilitating as it used to be.

Me personally tho....having watched the Niners excel these past years makes me SOOOOOOO happy that the 49ers drafted Iupati, Anthony Davis, and Joe Staley (and they Staley pick cost the Niners a 1st round pick the following year...that's how the Pats got Mayo).

At the time they weren't "sexy" picks, but those guys are the cornerstone of that team. They allowed Kaep to develop because they were ale to keep him upright and provede him a great running game.

KC has some of the pieces on the line and they have Charles already.

That's funny....because we've already invested several high round picks on the O-line.

The only reason I can think of is the value of the pick, and you have other players higher on your board who you believe are legitimately better.

I don't know if that's what those guys have said because I ignore them. But that's the only conceivable reason.

Geno needs to be the pick regardless.

That's nice. You do realize most teams in recent history that actually WON a SB aren't built that way right? I don't even believe the Giants had 1st round lineman and the Ravens were okay on the line. The common denominator on those teams was a first round QB that lit it up in the playoffs and SB.

Guys, he's a Niners fan.

3/5 of his team's offensive line was drafted in the first round. His stud QB was a 2nd round jackpot. And his team fields a Top 3 defense.

The Niners are a True Fans' wet dream.

Honestly?

He reminds me ALOT of Alex Smith in college (check out Smith COLLEGE stats). Am I impressed with him as a player? Yes....but I don't see him as the "can't miss" player he would have to be with that pick.

I didn't like it when the Niners took Smith at #1. I didn't like the Russell pick to the Raiders. Bad things happen when you reach for a QB at #1. Does that mean he will be a bad player? No....not at all...I'd take him in round 1...just not first overall.
