The 49ers have expressed to others that a deal for QB Alex Smith is effectively complete. Can't be finalized til league year begins 3/12

Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora

so it's not official, both clubs view it at as it's effectively done. I do not know the other team. KC and JAX are 2 teams that make sense

Irrelevant.

You have to look how they are playing NOW.

Alex had 1 TD and 11 INTs as a rookie. Thats a pretty big hole to dig out of. Look at his career TRAJECTORY tho. He has posted an improvement to his QB rating in every single solitary season of his career.

This. Especially a team who needs a QB but is not in a position to get one in the draft.

Why should i believe that Smith is better than a Game Manager? He's 2 seasons removed from being "casseld" by 9er fans. Remember when you guys were screaming for his replacement?

What was Harbaugh's first order of business when arriving in SF? Oh that's right....finding Smith's replacement....and he replaced him mid season...why? Because he knows that Game Managers usually don't win superbowls.

Smith is such a great QB that the team that drafted him wouldn't even give him a long term contract.

Sorry, im not buying it.

17 TDs and 5 INTs is his best year. Compared to the rest of the league.....that's ****ing horrible.

I'd love to have Revis, but this won't happen. The $$$$ he wants would destroy them. They are up against the cap right now as it is and they have to resign Delanie Walker and Dashon GOldon. Next year they'll have Alex Boone (OG..PB alternate), Crabtree.....and Kaepernick to resign.

Thats gonna be huge $$$$....they can't spend that much on a CB.

let's be clear:

Alex Smith is a ****ing nobody

he was under a leash so bad he barely threw for a 180 yards a game...even after a fluke season Hardbog knew he had to be replaced and replaced him the first chance he got

but we're the Chiefs, so we're supposed to be thankful for getting the 49ers trash...and we're supposed to pay a premium for the trash no one wanted last year...

sound likes deja vu

...when you compare him to unbalanced pass heavy teams...you are corect. Thats not who the Niners are tho. They are a run first team.

People always think thats because they were limiting Alex Smith, but thats incorrect. That run first offense with overstacked lines, every running play ever created and multiple TEs is what Harbaugh and Roman ran at Stanford.

Everyone seems to love Kaep these days but he only threw 10 TDs in half a season.

The 49ers simply aren't going to throw the ball 30-40 times a game regardless of who is at QB. Alex was on Pace for 24TDs this season. If you want to look at a similar statline for a run first team....look at Troy Aikmans stats in the early 90's. People say you win in the air these days....but you might want to tell the two teams who went to the SB that.

http://www.ninersnation.com/2011/11/...bout-the-49ers

Misconception #2: It's all run, all the time.

This one gets repeated frequently by almost everybody. True, Frank Gore has had a resurgent season with an outstanding stretch of games, but the run game hasn't dominated the 49ers offense. Some interesting (at least to me) numbers:

Rushing plays--266
Passing plays--239
Sacks--23

This means that the 49ers ran the ball 266 times and attempted to pass the ball 262 times. That's the very definition of balanced.

Rushing yardage--1178
Passing yardage--1616

Again, refuting the idea that the 49ers offense is built around the run.

Rushing TDs--9
Passing TDs--11

Of course this doesn't tell us how the team got into scoring position, but it's another indicator that the 49ers aren't a run always, or even a run first team.
