St. Louis mayor gets blasted in Deadspin

If you ever needed another reason to dislike that town across the state, see now this:

The other day, the Wall Street Journal accurately noted that the Cardinals are the most loathsome team in this year's playoffs. Well, Mayor Francis Slay (NOTE: quality lead singer name) wasn't about to take that shit lying down. He took time off from arming the police with rail guns yesterday to pen an op-ed in the WSJ, defending the Cardinals and then doing that thing all politicians do where they trump up their voting district like they're listing their own personal résumé. Let's get into this pile of garbage.

A little more intelligence.

And hey, I resent that remark.

Of course I'm from Joplin so any place that isn't infested with lead poisoning and idiocy seems nice.

A lot of it is good fun... although I will say I have had a couple rough interactions with Cards fans during the Royals/Cards games over the years. One time I made a joke about Mike Matheny during a game after he'd made an error, and the Cards fan in front of me proceeded to give me a stern lecture about how he was one of the best catchers in baseball. He was not happy. It was like a Deadspin column come to life.

But it's probably not much different than KU basketball fans, or modern day Pats fans... or any fanbase that has had sustained success.

Entirely possible. But that letter makes it sound like STL has an inferiority complex with the rest of the country.

No, that letter makes it sound like the mayor is unfunny with little common sense. It does not represent the whole city.

This!

Its just butthurt jealousy. The Royals are winnning. They are winning in the playoffs. Get over the asshole Cardinal fans in college. Concentrate on the Royals. Your winning, why should you give a **** about another teams stupid ass mayor?

I was at Busch stadium as a kid maybe 13 years old (early 90s), and my brother and I were filling out all star ballots. He asked me who I voted for as the NL catcher, and I said whomever I'd chosen, don't remember who. This guy older than my parents in front of us was listening and he turns around and makes fun of me for not voting for Tom Pagnozzi.

I still remember that sententious douche's face and his dumbass Patrick Duffy haircut like it just happened.

I had a Cards fan get all pissed off at me for ripping on Matheny during the I-70 series this year at Kauffman. I think he was surprised when he turned around and saw me wearing a Cardinals T-shirt.

OMG thank you for stating the obvious!!111!1!

No ****ing shit. The residents who suffer the inferiority complex don't want St. Louis to be considered a Midwestern/Southern city. They want to portray St. Louis like Chicago, which it clearly isn't. Additionally, said residents want St. Louis to be considered an Eastern city, which it ****ing isn't.
