It seems that eventually you're just changing things to change things because you can't conjure up a new superhero that people will give a crap about and sell comics. So you're using the name and memory to force people to care, it does diminish the character for the old fans, especially if you don't make that changed characters story worth reading.

I'm with you. I see nothing wrong with putting a black woman in one of the Iron Suits, just don't change a pillar character in the universe to the opposite race and gender. It's stupid and gimmicky. You want a female Wolverine? Fine, make a female equivalent to Logan and have them team up. Same with Thor, Spider Man, Iron Man - any of them.
