So they really don't think much of Cooper, Gaines, Flemming or Owens....I wonder if Branch is still in the works?

The best way to save money is to sign Houston long-term. You can get his $13M cap number down to $5-6M which can help you afford Revis. You can also backload Revis' contract, which I'm sure would make him do backflips. Revis interestingly enough has played most of his career under mostly non-guaranteed contracts.

I am not super excited about Revis.

If you can get him for a decent price, sure.

If he thinks he's getting Smith money, no.

Why are you so enamored with Alex Smith's contract and the Chiefs' ability to cut him? Do you honestly think he's going anywhere any time soon? The Chiefs have no realistic heir to Smith. Unless Winston or Mariota drop they won't have one this year. If the Chiefs continue to do well, they won't be atop a draft board in the near future to sniff a pure franchise QB, so the best you can hope for is a 2nd or 3rd round type that Reid feels he can develop on the bench for a couple seasons. By then, Alex's contract is up. I'd seriously not worry about Alex Smith's contract. Even then, even if the Chiefs' restructure him, I've already shown you that he remains a cut option in the years you continue to reference. In fact, the only year that will really be a factor is 2017, and they'd save 6.98 million instead of 9.7 million if they did cut him. They cannot cut Smith in 2016 no matter what they do. **** man, the restructure of Alex Smith is a good deal for right now and really doesn't affect the future like you think it somehow will. Give up beating that drum bud.

The Pats and Broncos aren't cheating the cap.

Revis is an interesting case. He chose bigger money on non-guaranteed contracts. Huge risk, since one injury could have lost him a LOT of money.

But now he's at an age where I'm sure his top concern is getting paid while he's in his 30's. He'll want a deal that's long-term, not short-term like he's always taken. The Pats won't give him that.

The restructure adds ~$2.5M to the cap every year he's a Chief to his already whopping ~$17M per year. I want the Chiefs to have an option to take Smith off the books as soon as they possibly can. I am not a critic of Smith's contract. I've said before I thought it was slotted right. So it's not about that. I don't think he should be viewed as a long-term option and want to ensure the Chiefs aggressively pursue options in the 3 years he's basically guaranteed to be a Chief. Further guaranteeing his contract only forces the Chiefs to be conservative and not draft and groom an eventual replacement.

I don't care how much money they SAVE in 2017 if cutting him leads to $10M in dead money. That's a bad way to do business. People have to keep in mind that if they thought $17M per year for him was too much, they're not going to be happy when it start to cost them $20M per yea.

The Boston Herald reports the Patriots are allowing CB Brandon Browner to "explore his value around the league."
Monday is the deadline for the Pats to exercise Browner's $1.9 million team option. If they do, Browner then takes home a $2 million roster bonus on Tuesday. He'd come with a $4.8 million cap number for 2015, something the Pats want to reduce. It sounds like they'll cut him loose absent a reduction. Cutting Browner would be a sign the Pats are planning for Darrelle Revis to return for a second season in New England.

Market for Browner is probably north of the $4.8 million he'd be paid by the Patriots, so he should probably HOPE to get cut.

Meanwhile, on Revis, the deadline is pretty much 4:00 today I guess.

Quote:
If the Patriots don’t work out an extension with Revis by Tuesday at 3:59 p.m., they can either pick up his 2015 option --- and hand him $9 million of a $12 million roster bonus (the other $3 million is deferred until March 31, 2016) -- or release him and let the All-Pro corner hit the free-agent market.

@JasonLaCanfora: Darrelle Revis situation still predicated on guaranteed $. Would NYJ/KC guarantee all of a 3yr/$42-$45M deal? Tough for NE or most teams...

@JasonLaCanfora: All things being equal, if it comes down to avg/yr being close, NE in great position. Question remains would a team guarantee all 3yrs?
