Bob Costas on the future of football: 'This game destroys people's brains'

“The reality is that this game destroys people’s brains," he said Tuesday night.

Speaking at a roundtable discussion at the University of Maryland, Costas, who hosted Football Night in America on NBC for more than a decade, said the sport could collapse over time, barring a development in technology to make it reasonably safe. He said the decline of football, which was once “a cash machine,” is the most significant story in American sports.

“The cracks in the foundation are there,” Costas said. “The day-to-day issues, as serious as they may be, they may come and go. But you cannot change the nature of the game. I certainly would not let, if I had an athletically gifted 12- or 13-year-old son, I would not let him play football.”

Also, I might add, that this guy was not, in any way, shape or form, built like a safety.

Short arms, short legs, body of a defensive lineman of the time, which I should have clarified when I made that comment so it wouldn't have led down this path.

People forget that a lot of these young athletes come from significantly horrific situations and sports are their only way to escape.

Most people in that situation will take the risk.

Most NFLers don't' come from gated communities.

I would also like to point out that players in the NFL, on average, live longer healthier lives than do a person not in the NFL. I had put a story talking about the study here on CP in the last year or two. So just because they have a higher risk of these concussions doesn't mean they aren't prone to a healthier life. It isn't exactly a cause and effect thing as anyone who worked out and ate like an NFL safety would probably have the same outcome. I am just saying the benefits outweight the risk here.

I am wondering where the studies are on the effects of long term usage of steroids, prescription pain killers and other drugs on the brains of athletes combined with the repeated head injuries. Some of them are impossible to avoid, like the head hitting the turf or multiple collisions. The problem, IMO, with a lot of scientific studies is that they decide what they are looking for and then find the data to back it up. Most scientific discoveries are not the EUREKA! type, they are more of the WTF JUST HAPPENED? type.

Why is boxing still allowed when the entire purpose of the sport is to give your opponent a concussion?

Yeah.

Way worse than players killing themselves at Arrowhead and fans flying banners?

Don't know about that.

More hyperbole from people who don't know what words mean...

I bet you were George! Your posting history showing severe lack of emotional maturity and many insecurities in responses to others say's otherwise.

Your emotional IQ barely registers which is very sad. When someone espouses a difference of opinion or has a different take you have this incessant emotional need to ridicule because your sooooo emotionally insecure when others differ from you. Whether it be a POV you didn't think of or stealing your thunder, or reminding others of your POV taking credit for yourself being very self-serving which you are very notorious for not to mention very pretentious. You really see yourself as BMOCPKIAB(Big Man on Chiefs Planet Know It All Bully) and you really believe you have an audience/fan club here that begs for your opinions on football and you will protect this "delusional ideation" at all costs because ONLY YOUR PERSPECTIVE IS ACCURATE and no one else. You really see yourself as the smartest guy in the room.

CP is the only thing in your life where you feel like a 'somebody' because in real life you feel like a 'nobody'. And your name calling and ridiculing others proves it. You emotional beat down others who differ from you as a few of your "lemmings just like you" pile on 'thinking' you look really cool in front of others. When in reality the majority here just at your "douchebag" behavior and see right through you. You fool nobody. You significantly shut down discussion and not because many are intimidated but because why put up with your "severe insecure idiocy". We all have insecurities because we are human, but how you deal with those insecurities determines whether you become comfortable in your own skin thus respected by others or continuing to take your insecurities out on others being "that guy".

I made this post first, actually.

In either case, 6' 210 pounds is perfectly acceptable for a safety in today's NFL.

We can drop it, though. It's really not a big deal.
