Movies

Yeah, so I saw a lot of movies this weekend.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age - Mediocre, at best. Slow and dragged on. Shorten it to 2 hours and it's golden. It's not, so it fails.

Michael Clayton - Amazing. Everything about it is awesome. However, it's VERY complex and mind bending. You have to think, so be prepared. I still feel like I'm missing key details of exactly what happened. Gotta see it again.

Across the Universe - Perfect is one word that comes to mind. It just works. And, contrary to many people I bet, the movie is best viewed sober. Trust me.

Tonight I saw "Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon". Interesting little indie horror film with a dash of humor. Starts out like a documentary, before the proverbial "shit" goes down. I enjoyed it.

This weekend:

- Let the Right One In. Nicely crafted film, but a bit of a let-down, considering bloodydisgusting called it the best horror film of the decade. In some ways, a lot like Twilight, except without the goofy shimmering and vampire baseball. Is this a coming of age story? I don't think so. A movie about bullying at school? In some ways. Tackling bullying, or exposing how to cope with bullying or curb its impact? Not at all.
Spoiler!
It might be a lovely picture, but it's not great.

- Paranormal Activity. Clever, and deserving of applause for the road it travels. The budget, student film, with a cheap camera, and some legitimate scares. Also not incredibly terrifying, but there's some good stuff in here that makes it a fine Halloween flick to watch in bed.

- Frantic. Old DVD, with no subtitles available, made me miss 1/2 the dialogue. I like Harrison Ford, but the mumbling was frustrating. The lack of action, suspense, intrigue was even more frustrating. Who cares about the drug smuggler girl/friend. Not me. I haven't even cared about the missing wife. There's no suspense. For a Polanski film, that is heavily trying to be a Hitchcock action-mystery, this was disappointing.

- Winter's Bone. This was an incredibly great movie. Perhaps only Toy Story 3 was a better movie I watched from this year. First of all, it was like Grand Theft Auto video game, going on these "missions" with the girl, asking these relatives where her dad was. Going to these people and talking with them, meeting them, recalling old memories, provided a great narrative. Secondly, the scenery of rural southern Missouri, the scene with the folk-singing lady, the auction, the sawing off of the hands, were some great moments that really struck me. Thirdly, watching these characters interact was really interesting, and especially
Spoiler!
. . . it's really just a puzzle that so mimicks the reality of people being not one-dimensional. Really great movie.

You should probably use some spoiler tags in that post, Jenson71.

You lost me at "a lot like Twilight". You must have watched a different movie.

Actually admitting you've seen Twilight is probably the biggest problem with comparing the two.

Admittedly, I haven't seen the American adaptation of Let the Right One In. I seriously, seriously can't imagine it being in the same damned universe as Twilight, though.

That's has to be like saying that 2001: A Space Odyssey is a lot like Starship Troopers.

Sorry guys; I knew that wouldn't be popular. And the one I saw was the Swedish adaptation. And I haven't seen Starship Troopers.

I've seen the first two Twilights. I'm a patron of the art of compromising. They're not great, and neither is Let the Right One In. The biggest difference is one takes itself entirely too seriously.

I'd agree on Twilight (I've also seen the first two). I voluntarily watched the first two recently, primarily so that I could speak intelligently about what is a pop culture phenomenon. They're not great, but they're not as awful as many would lead you to believe. They're way too sappy for my taste, and I hate that they pissed all over the vampire lore, but they're not worse than a lot of what's available. Seriously... I'd watch Twilight if it meant not having to watch Troy or Alexander.

Exact thoughts on the latter. Redbox Winter's Bone is coming to my tv sometime this week.

Exactly.

And for an adaptation the American version sets a bar as far as that goes. Fincher and The Girl Who series is going to have to meet or exceed.

I loved Independence Day. This Skyline movie looks kinda interesting. Why would you knock it? Surely, you haven't seen it yet.

You're correct but it does contain 3 minor television character actors and some pretty crappy trailers.

But I might rent it.
