It does take forever. You have to load each CD into your computer, and then use your music program (e.g. iTunes) to load each tune into the harddrive. Then you can make your playlists to transfer them into your phone.
The good news is, if you get a new phone with a lot of space, once your library is loaded into your computer you can basically put your whole music library into the phone in about a half hour. My iPhone 7 has my whole collection, which is 30GB (6000 songs) worth of music on it. |

I have 1300+ CDs that have largely languished since I got my ipod touch. But now I also have bluetooth and WiFi to my living room receiver, and am mulling an interest in backing everything up to a drive and packing everything up and either selling it or putting it in the attic out of the way. But I already use my big drives as a DVR, with OTA taking up 8Gb an hour and streaming taking up around 1-2 Gb per hour. I had a lot of space [~4.5Tb] but don't want to undertake all this just to turn around and need more space as a result. I also want to use the best lossless CODEC available because it'll be, for all intents and purposes, the last time I utilize the reference materials. |

For ripping CDs I use Window media player set to wav lossless. I have an old desktop with win 7 just for this purpose.
other options are Exact Audio Copy its great for ripping to flac. Wavelab and Media Monkey are aok also. if you use Itunes and like it it also will do fine just remember its going to take time and space.

An average FLAC rip of a CD is ~300-600MB.

I can't imagine going through the effort of ripping that many discs though. I completely understand there can be a difference between between 320kbps and lossless when critically listening with the right gear and right recordings. However, I stopped caring a long while back both out of convenience and realizing how little I do sit in the sweet spot of my system and criticallly listen. Add in that you can mostly get all of music now with a streaming service at 320kbps and even my lossless FLAC files or MP3s are rotting unused. |
