Wish Me Luck

well, I haven't been on the Planet as much as I used to. It's been a busy month. I attended a Truck Driving school over the course of the past month and finished the school last Friday. After 15 years in telecom, I have had enough. Tired of the constant layoffs/project-based work....and actually grew to hate the actual work when it was there.

I have my Class A CDL test tomorrow morning at the DMV. I feel pretty confident. Others in my class who were at the same skill level as myself all passed their tests Monday and today. They all said that basically the 'tests' we were given at the school, were much more stringent than the DMV test - essentially, if you did well on the tests at school, you should have no problem at the DMV.

I've got a few pre-hire letters with companies; 2 of which will have me home every weekend. Another will have me home 3 days for 11 days out. My goal is to treat this upcoming year as an extension of my school/training, and try to get at least 12 months experience then start scouting 'local' jobs here in KC with a more predictable schedule, and hopefully decent hourly pay.

Good luck! Remember - while taking your driving test with the Trooper in the truck with you, do NOT shift gears while going over railroad tracks. That will earn you an automatic GTFO grade and you'll have to try again.

Good luck bud.

I'm currently a PM in telecom and am scared that layoffs are inevitably coming at some point

that's what I did for the last 15 years. Project Manager, Coordinator, Controller etc. For some reason, the last 7 years it seemed to be more and more common to bring in folks for a project, then as the project was wrapping up to start cutting expenses/Overhead etc. and in project based models, typically, staff is considered a straight expense or OH instead of a capital expenditure.

it just sucked hard. I was CONSTANTLY worried about layoffs. then fighting for another PM job in telecom, along with all the others who were let go. It was damn near impossible to 'plan' for anything beyond 6-8 months out at a time.

Granted, I'm sure trucking isn't a bed of roses most times, but at least (or so it appears) the need for drivers is there constantly. It's a big adjustment for me and my wife for sure. But she's on board with it. I figure it's a low risk proposition. If I get into it for a few years and hate it.....I'm really not out a ton of $ and only out the time I committed. I have been thinking about doing it for the last 2 years, and finally just said "**** it" and did it.

at some point, I'll need to create a thread for CP to come up with a CB handle for me. I'm sure CP's brilliance will shine brightly with that task.
