Talib: Facemask was intentional

http://nesn.com/2016/02/aqib-talib-c...-foul-was-b-s/

Aqib Talib Committed Facemask ‘On Purpose’; First Personal Foul ‘Was B.S.’
by Doug Kyed

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — There was no one more ecstatic in the post-Super Bowl 50 press conference room than the always entertaining and sometimes volatile Aqib Talib.

The Broncos cornerback marched up to his podium with his three children and let out an enthused, “Yoooooo” after Denver beat the Carolina Panthers 24-10 for his first championship ring.

The night didn’t start out too positively for Talib, who was charged with two personal fouls in the first 20 minutes of action.

“It was all good,” Talib assured. “It was B.S. flags. One was on our sidelines — the guy was talking on our sideline. One I just did on purpose, and I just had to show him. It’s probably going to be a fine, but hey, we’re world champs.”

Talib’s first personal foul came when he was called for taunting after pushing Panthers wideout Corey Brown out of bounds following a Broncos sack.

“We were just talking, and it was getting a little chippy, so the ref picked me to slow the game down,” Talib said. “We didn’t do anything. We were just talking noise to each other, me and (Brown), a regular conversation.”

The second was thrown when he yanked Brown out of bounds by the receiver’s facemask to prevent a touchdown. Talib downplayed the impact of the foul.

“My teammates knew what it was,” Talib said. “He was on the 3-yard line. (With) a personal foul, he was on the 1 1/2-yard line, so it is what it is.”

The Panthers scored their only touchdown on the ensuing play, when running back Jonathan Stewart leaped over the line for the score.

“That was the most fun game I’ve played in by far,” Talib said. “I had about four or five catches on me, and I still think that was the most fun I’ve had in a game in my life.”

By the looks and sounds of it, Talib also had plenty of fun after the game, too.

I don't think anyone -- not even Talib -- would argue against that. The thing is, though, no ref is going to eject a player from the Super Bowl just because he did something ejectable -- but hardly unprecedented -- between the whistles.

I was actually thinking just for the next play. I'm not sure what an 11 on 10 would do in football, but I would think even one play would be enough to make teams think twice about cheapshotting someone or touching Tom Brady.

amendola did this to us with his pf on fleming in the playoffs. talib did the same thing on brown. it was situational football. its called a 15 yarder, but inside the 10, it really doesnt mean squat for yardage. it helps the pats and broncos. cheaters win again.

wanna fix it? if you get a personal foul that keeps a player off the field, you don't play til he comes back. that game. that season.

How many times have I said this same thing?

If the league doesn't suspend Talib for admitting to what he did, the rest of the league needs to understand that you establish a healthy fear in the other team EARLY in the game so they have it in their mind the rest of the game.

So Talib made a calculated decision and was right. They'd not see it for what it was, they'd not toss him because it's the SB, and all it cost the Donks was one yard - the Panthers were going in no matter if it was 1 yard or two. And what that one yard bought him was a certain level of fear for the rest of the game.

The NFL has a choice to make and I suspect they'll blow it off with maybe a fine and then make it go away. We can only hope the Chiefs take notes this time and take what the NFL is giving.

They will next year! Goodell has already said that he is bringing that to the commission. I just hope they increase the number of players available to play.

This was unprecedented. Show me a single example of a more violent facemask penalty that was as violent, as prolonged, was clearly intentional as evidenced by the use of leverage in a way that caused the opposing player to leave his feet.

Yeah, like finally buying into rub routes, let's hope we don't pick-up on doing things they year they start calling them.

The Donks and Pats push the rules to ensure they can exploit them the longest. Smart on their part I guess.

We can hate it all we want, but he's a World Champion thug right now.

I said it in the game yesterday, the Panthers didn't come to play like it was the last game of the year that they had to win.

And next year might be too late, the NFL might actually toss a player for that (even in the SB) after this snub. They'll claim it doesn't bother them, but it's chapping their ass right now. And the whole world called it while the league glossed over it. They let Talib punk them in worst way.
