Malaysia Airlines loses contact with plane carrying 239 people

Malaysia Airlines says it has lost contact with a plane with 239 aboard enroute from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

The airline said in a statement early Saturday it was attempting to locate the Boeing 777 after it lost contact with Subang Air Traffic Control at 2:40 a.m. It was scheduled to land in Beijing at 6:30 a.m.

China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported the plane was lost in airspace controlled by Vietnam, and did not make contact with Chinese air traffic controllers.

The plane is carrying 227 passengers, including two infants, and 12 crew members. The airline said it is working with authorities to locate the plane.

Boeing said on its Twitter account it is monitoring the situation, and "our thoughts are with everyone on board."

Not only that, they can turn the CVR off at any time, if they turned the XPONDER off then they most likely turned the CVR off.

I can't remember a story more blown out of proportion. So much money wasted on dead people. These countries should spend all that money on those living.

Sometimes I'll forget why I put someone on ignore, so I'll click on "view post" out of curiosity, and 9 times out of 10 I'll read something like this and be quickly reminded why they were there in the first place.

It's clear that you're either trolling or you're a douche, but the point is that we want to learn what happened so that 1) the families can have some closure and 2) we can prevent it from happening again in the future.

It should be made impossible to turn off the radar tracking from a passenger plane. What would be a good reason for a civilian passenger plane to be able to turn it off?

the voice recorder loops every two hours but all the plane systems are recorded for the entire flight and I don't think the pilot can do anything to change that. the pilot can't tell the black box to stop recording altitude, fuel, engine status, air pressure, speed, etc., etc., etc....

Maybe the airlines will finally enter the 21st century and update their planes with hard drives capable of storing more than 2 hours of audio.

I would think they could not only install cameras on the vertical stabilizer, at the front, and in the cockpit/passenger compartment and offset the costs by offering access to the files for passengers after the trip for a small fee and/or just adding $5 to the price of the ticket. You wouldn't need to access it very often - but in situations such as this (or 9/11-style hijackings) you would have invaluable data in real-time that ATC could access during and after the event.

Heck, the amount of money they've spent on this recovery would probably pay for all the upgrades you'd need on every commercial plane currently flying.

I heard them talk about this on CNN a couple of weeks ago. They already have the technology to transmit black box data in real time via satellites. The airline companies are to cheap to implement it. The FAA should mandate this on all US airliners.
