Malaysia Airlines loses contact with plane carrying 239 people

Malaysia Airlines says it has lost contact with a plane with 239 aboard enroute from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

The airline said in a statement early Saturday it was attempting to locate the Boeing 777 after it lost contact with Subang Air Traffic Control at 2:40 a.m. It was scheduled to land in Beijing at 6:30 a.m.

China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported the plane was lost in airspace controlled by Vietnam, and did not make contact with Chinese air traffic controllers.

The plane is carrying 227 passengers, including two infants, and 12 crew members. The airline said it is working with authorities to locate the plane.

Boeing said on its Twitter account it is monitoring the situation, and "our thoughts are with everyone on board."

What is ironic is that after all the talk of how the world has become a much smaller place, you can't hide anywhere today, and technology can find you no matter where you go, it appears that the earth truly has many more places left to discover and find......

My "don't trust the gov't" brain tells me they know exactly what happened with the plane and all this mystery is being orchestrated for some other reason.

One of the earliest theories was that we shot it down (by accident). It didn't get much traction from the mainstream US press (surprise, surprise). It's reminiscent of flight 800 in that regard.

And I still think there's a chance that's the case, although it doesn't necessarily have to be us that did it. It could have been China or someone else. Taking all this time could be about trying to quell some kind of greater international incident.

It could also be nothing of the sort, and the whole thing is ongoing just to divert public attention away from the situation in the Ukraine. Or something else. Maybe all the banker suicides.

That's basically always the way I look at major stories like this plane these days. Stories that are basically circuses to keep people infotained. What important story are they trying to hide behind it?

I've had a few interactions with media people on a local level, and with one exception I've come away very unimpressed. It's not so much that they're working as part of any great conspiracy, but rather they simply don't understand the point of stories and just latch on some point and then try to "prove" it no matter where the facts lead. I could see where it's very easy to mislead the media if you become friendly with them and point them in your preferred direction early on.

I've actually had a fairly good amount of interaction with media (television side). They're all about ratings, and would I guess be very easy to manipulate.

I think it's a pretty open secret by now that the military gets what they want with the national press. If they don't, nobody is given stories or embedded. The first amendment is more of a guideline in spirit than a real, active goal. Although I think an even bigger aspect of it is the fact that 'news' has given way to ratings. The press is an entertainment industry now, not an information source.

Now, I don't think there necessarily has to be any grand conspiracy. More just a willingness on behalf of the media to be complicit with whatever story the folks in charge want out there. And I think that's exactly what the major network and cable outlets give them.

I don't think you'd ever see anything like Woodward and Bernstein in today's media environment, unfortunate as that is. It's not the same world anymore.

This is spot on. Our government and others have covered up many things that we know about through various measures. They have also intentionally kept attention diverted while they did something else just so it would make the headlines and cause a big stink, everyone learns that our government has passed a law or something and wonder when and how did that happen.

The military should go back to having their own press corps that releases what the public NEEDS to know.
