Who needs to step up in 2015?

We have a big opportunity to do something big next year and I truly believe that. At least 1 playoff game should be won if some things fall into place and we need a few guys to step up their game for us to have success next year.

Here's the idea...pick a player and tell us why and how he is gonna step up next year and what kind of an impact that can make on the team.

I'll take the low hanging fruit to kick it off.

1) Alex Smith. No question, this is the time to put up or shut up. He was comfortable throwing to Avant and Wilson towards the end of last year (and that's pretty much it) and they both return and we added a guy that will be open all over the field in Jeremy Maclin. We are sure to add another receiver in the draft, too. With our running game and upgrades to the OL, there are NO EXCUSES for him to not have a big year that gets us into the playoffs. It's his third year in the system and that's when the jump usually happens for quarterbacks. He should be comfortable getting more and more aggressive with the ball as the year goes on and everybody gets on the same page.

It all starts and ends with him and I think the team has the horsepower to win a playoff game or more if he steps it up this year.

2) ????

And heres the thing about Kush, just because Reid was recently quoted as saying "Kush is our center this year" literally means less than nothing.

It could eeeasily be a big fat baldfaced lie of a smokescreen while they secretly stroke it to thoughts of Erving or whoever.

Boss is capable of fighting his own fight, but the fact of the matter is that Dex IS talented... in many ways, he was our most dependable receiver and had a sweet kick return or two as well.

We have the better midget now, and thank God for it... but to say he has no talent is bogus.

I'm going to step outside the box and say that Laurent Duverny-Tardiff is the guy that needs to step up.

This idea that guys that move like they are weighed down with anchors chained to their ankles (Fulton and Fanaika) are somehow magically improve from anchor laden scrub status is almost absurd.

LDT, with his combination of size and athleticism could possibly be the next great NFL guard.

The guy is a scrub and proved it last year.

Let it go.

You could make a case for just about anyone, really. We've got a ton of unknowns (Kush), new guys (Grubbs, Maclin), unprovens (Parker, Allen, Fulton, Stephenson, Mauga, Ford, Gaines), underachievers (Alex Smith, Fisher), not to mention this new class of rookies who will likely see some significant playing time.

The only guys Id give an A grade coming into this season are Houston, Jamaal and Kelce. Kelce is definitely on the upswing but it's very likely that Houston's sack total will regress, although I'm sure he'll still be a great player all-around, and Jamaal might start to show his age pretty soon. We'll need these others guys to step up and mitigate any loss we might have in their production.

Hard to argue with that, MM.

Doc has all of the raw tools in spades, I'm just not sure how much he needs and wants football.

Also, anyone that's a backup and is forced into a starting role or plays significant time.

We were fairly unfortunate last season with the injury bug. Luckily, guys like Parker and Mauga filled in nicely, but as we all saw, it only takes one turd looking like shit to sink the ship (I'm looking at you, Mcglynn).

That next man up philosophy needs to shine bright just in case..

Defense? It's much better than you think.

Now the Run D needs improvement.

Wasn't the overall D top 5?

Without reading the thread, I think Albert Wilson stepping up would do wonders for Alex and the offense. Towards the end of the year he wad getting open, and he was doing something after the catch. Perfect for Alex.

No, he's not... he just has a very weird mix of size/skills.

He's a quicker than normal possession receiver in Dante Halls body, last year just proved that Whisenhunt isn't a very imaginative playcaller... Reid had him hitting his ceiling while he was here.
