Chris Pratt Lands GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Lead

After countless shortlist stories and rumors concerning who would play Star-Lord in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, the search for the lead role is finally over, and fittingly the actor is someone who never appeared on any of the aforementioned lists. Deadline reports that Chris Pratt has been tapped to play Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, a character who was born of a human mother and alien father, and is a master strategist and combat expert who wears an ability-enhancing suit and pilots a psychically-linked ship. As Guardians features a cast of strange and cosmic characters, Quill was an important role to fill because he will likely act as the audience’s introduction to the vast, unfamiliar Guardians world. There were plenty of actors rumored for the role that made a lot of sense (John Krasinski, Zachary Levi, etc.), and Deadline notes that Marvel made test deals with Joel Edgerton, Jack Huston, Lee Pace, and Eddie Redmayne, but Chris Pratt actually seems like a perfect fit. His comic timing is excellent as evidenced by his work on NBC’s Parks and Recreation, and he’s shown his talent on the dramatic side with Moneyball and 2012’s Zero Dark Thirty, for which he also proved that he can beef up for a role if need-be.

Looking back on the previous shortlists and taking Pratt into consideration, it’s clear that writer/director James Gunn is planning on injecting a good amount of humor into Guardians of the Galaxy. A rumor surfaced recently that Marvel was looking at possibly tapping Jim Carrey or Adam Sandler to do voice work in the film (one of the guardians is a talking raccoon), so I’m interested to see the tone that Gunn settles on for the finished film.

With the role of Star-Lord secure, Gunn and Marvel now look to filling out the rest of the cast, which includes the powerful Drax the Destroyer, a giant tree named Groot, the aforementioned Rocket Raccoon, and the female lead Gamora. The story is also rumored to involve the villain Thanos. Expect to hear more soon as production gears up to begin later this year. Guardians of the Galaxy will be released in 3D on August 1, 2014.

I have had these comics since I was 12. And have read 4-5 probably over 1000 times in that span.
And It never got old.

Is that Ron Lim art? I always thought he had the best Silver Surfer.

Surfer was my guy back in the day. The battles he had with Thanos were always pretty great.

Would a non-comic fan, like my wife, enjoy it? She likes the main stream type stuff but when she saw the previews for this one....she had a confused look on her face.

I think so. The dialogue is hilarious and the movie never really slows down like many comic book movies. Not much filler at all.

Most importantly, it was fun. I give it a B - not as good as the Avengers, either Captain America, or Iron Man, but still worth it.

On the way home, I figured out the four reasons why. I'll spoiler, just in case. Spoiler! 1. The writing was bad. It was predictable and formulaic, as if it were written by committee. Everything happened right when it should, and went right according to plan. The characterizations and character evolution weren't natural, but they happened because it was time for them to. Relatedly, their most talented actors were underused. 2. Yondu was distractingly bad. Michael Rooker should not have been let near that part. His southern drawl (why?) and Merle-like delivery broke up the movie every time he was on camera, and he had no arc, or reason for me to care about him at all. 3. The ending was terrible. It didn't resolve some things (Ronan's impressive hammer went unused, Nebula just sort of went away), and deus ex machina'ed others (why Quill wasn't vaporized when he touched the gem, Groot having whatever power they needed at the time). It was very unfulfilling. 4. All of the best parts were in the trailers. Now mind you, that doesn't mean it was bad by any stretch. Spoiler! It was a gorgeous movie, imaginative and compelling. The visuals were great - I loved the look of the Kree ship, and of Thanos, who looked and sounded perfect. There were a few moments of surprising vulnerability and only one character (mentioned above) was a real paperweight. And the post-credit scene was hilarious. Most importantly, it was fun. I give it a B - not as good as the Avengers, either Captain America, or Iron Man, but still worth it.
