I have dozens of Asian friends (and ever more in my wife's side of the family) and they always make fun or laugh at white people that eat sushi with their hands.

It's certainly more common to use chopsticks in the U.S. for some reason, but it's perfectly acceptable to use your fingers. Iron Chef Morimoto confirms, as will a ton of other sites out there.

Here's my eating food wrong story:

I was traveling through NY on my way to Saudi Arabia. I was 16, maybe 17 and had never been there before. I grab a slice and sit down to eat it. I had never eaten pizza with a fork before but for some reason I started to eat it with a fork. I think because it was so big.

Well I learned a valuable, humiliating, lesson that day. Ridicule city. All slices are now partaken after folding it in half.

I only use my fingers if for some reason it falls apart, and then I feel guilty and foolish. This news is uplifting for me.

On another note, I don't like it when a restaurant has fancy metal chopsticks. It's hard to pick stuff up with slick metal. Old-fashioned wood is the best way to go.

I wonder if any restaurants have gourmet wooden chopsticks. Y'know, like teak or mahogany or something.

Word. Wood holds the grub better. I have a set of Bamboo sticks. They are slick as well but they have ribs. This particular set has a rib close to the tip so they are awesome. But you don't get that wood taste that blends well with Asian.

Being ridiculed and made fun of by a serious New Yorker, at 16, was a hell of a deal man.

And to top it off, I was drinking my beer (yes underage drinking) with a straw. I was using a straw because I thought it got you drunk faster and we like to pass out for the trip. It was 13.5 hrs out of Chicago.
