Holy balls stuff ain't cheap

So the wife and I just bought a house last month (hooray a mortgage), now we are furnishing it.

Holy shit why didn't any of you warn me with how much that costs?

I blame everyone here.

I'm moving here from Calfornia. Was hoping for the "lower cost of living."
Other than house cost and gas, I'm not seeing it.

Housing?

If you get out to south Johnson County to Leawood, Lenexa, et al, you should be able to find great properties with huge yards and great schools for a fraction of the cost.

If you need an agent, I can hook you up with an amazing Keller-Williams guy that I've known since I was 12 years old.

Food is more costly. The veggies aren't as good or fresh because they've sat on a refrigerated truck for four days. Beef, chicken and pork are a fraction of the cost (and way, way, way, better) but fish is astronomical.

You pay a premium for bad sushi, IMO.

Do big box stores like Home Depot adjust prices in the store based on their location in the country?

I hear you on the produce, already experienced it.

Meat? paid 5 bucks for two skinless chicken breasts at Price Chopper. Not a deal.

Sushi? Had what yelped at 4.5 and it was on par with grocery store sushi in Ca.

House? OP and South Leawood are a bargain compared to CA but too far from everything. We got something closer and we're satisfied. Comparibly.

I grew up out there so the drive doesn't bother me. If you lived there, could you cut across Metcalf or Roe or Nall to I-35? I'm not familiar with your location.

Best of luck, Dude! And "objects are much closer than they appear".

You already purchased? Awesome!

To be honest, I've only driven through Mission Hills. I've never been in a house or neighborhood there. Congrats!

We're fortunate in that our 7 year old spend three years at this preschool, with excellent results. Two years after she "graduated" (and they had an awesome graduation ceremony), her closet friends are still from that preschool.

They have musicals each quarter and our youngest really shined in the Winter Celebration. They have a true stage, sound system and Hollywood choreographers and set designers (and some Dad's that are cinematographers that film everything!) and it's so much fun to see the kids sing and dance.

It really is the perfect setting for your children and I'm sorry that yours didn't work out initially.
Yeah. We really thought that we were going to get something along the lines of the experience you all have had due to the reputation of this school. Just blows me away that people will continue to pay premium dollar for an inferior product just because of reputation.

The Montessori here is uhhh... nice now, though (picture below). So it's starting to compete with the place mentioned above.

I couldn't be happier with our public school system here, though. We've been blessed with great teachers and experiences, especially for our special needs son. While they certainly haven't coddled him and treated him as exceptional, they've made workmanlike progress with him that amazes me. Hell, we didn't think he'd ever be able to read, and he's now on grade level and reads for multiple hours a day if allowed to.
