There's Speeding...then there's SPEEDING

Sorry if a re-post. Dude clocked going over 200 mph in a Mustang in Oklahoma:

http://www.kmbc.com/article/man-arre...rnpike/8300966

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says a state trooper arrested a driver after clocking his speed at more than 200 mph.

The patrol says Trooper Ryan Smith pulled over the man Saturday on the Kilpatrick Turnpike in Oklahoma City. Authorities say the man was driving a Ford Mustang and the trooper's radar clocked the car at 176 mph and then 208 mph.

Authorities say the driver attempted to elude the state trooper -- turning off his headlights and brake lights at one point -- but he was eventually pulled over at a red light. The highway patrol says the driver stopped his car and dropped his keys out of the window.

The highway patrol says the driver was arrested on complaints of reckless driving and felony eluding.

With LS and the new coyote engines, if you slap a couple turbos on them and have a good tuner and deep pockets 200mph isn't out of reach anymore. A new mustang and 20-25K in parts and you are pretty much keeping up with supercars until you have to turn.

Faster I have ever been was when a buddy capped his 140 MPH speedo in a 72 Roadrunner. I buried my 120 MPH speedo in my 68 LeMans once. That was many, many years ago. No need to go that fast anymore. 100 is plenty fast enough for me nowdays.

Fastest I've been in my own car is easy.

137, speed limited, in my Grand Prix. More times than I care to count.

My job used to take me on some pretty desolated stretches of interstate downstate MO and IL, and there were plenty of open places to open it up. I'd mostly do it to open up the pipes, not for any thrills, and never with any traffic anywhere around.

I was wondering how long before this story hit here.

So I live less than a mile from where this took place. No effin' way did this kid get his 2011 gt up that high. Not even close. Couple of reasons for the disbelief.
The kid brags about running 12s in the 1/4 in that car...any car that is running 12s isn't coming close to 208. Another is I have a buddy that is part of the Mustang club and track racing scene here. He has an 2011 Shelby gt500 that has been modded up to 760hp. He isn't sniffing 200 with that (he hit 184 on the Texas mile strip). Yet another reason is the entire stretch that this took place is a curve. So the hypo wants us to believe that this kid shot up from 84 (initial radar clocked speed) to 176, to 208 on a freaking curve...rrriiiigggghhhhtttt.

I could go on poking holes in the hypos story, but you guys get it and it looks like no one is buying it anyways. If the kid has a competent lawyer he'll get off with some fines and the felony endangerment will be tossed out.

Kind of. The kid exited at the next exit (NW Expressway) and there happened to be a county sheriff sitting there. The kid passed the sheriff before the call went out, sheriff heard the call saying a car passed him matching that description. Hypo exited after he turned around and caught up to him at the next light.

So that adds more fun to the story. While on a curve, the kid went from 84 to 208 in the span of about 1.5 miles.

In all seriousness, the kid did probably shoot up over a hundo as I have taken that curve @ 110 before in my m3, but there is no way he hit the speeds they claim.

156 in my Sonata of all things. Those 2.0 liter turbos will run, man.

And not surprisingly, it was in Western Oklahoma. You take 40 past El Reno (sounds like that's where they got him) and after another half hour or so you hit 183; take that north and you could fly. I would need to get up to Woodward and there were several probably 15 mile stretches without a hill or a curve on that road.

And NO presence of any sort. I remember before they built the new courthouse in Taloga (Dewey County) you could rocket through there, get through an entire county seat and not even really realize you'd been there.

It remains the most desolate part of the country I've driven through apart from the high desert in Wyoming. Just completely empty and begs for you to see how fast you can get whatever you're driving.

Yeah western OK is desolate. This was on the kilpatrick turnpike. So not quite that far out there...still OKC technically. He first got clocked at Council rd. and exited NW expressway which is about a mile and a half. The light they pulled him over is about a mile from the turnpike. NW expressway and Sara rd.

200 MPH is about more than just raw HP. You also need the appropriate gearing/transmission, tires and suspension. You're going to have hard time reaching 200 MPH w/o the appropriate gear ratio.

Sure, you could get away with no suspension mods but....most people who are dropping that kinda coin aren't gonna skip out on suspension and brakes.

You would need the computer remapped and the governor removed. You'd need an all new fuel delivery system to support the power, i.e Injectors, rails and pump.

Your estimate of 20-25K may even be on the low side once we factor in labor. Even if you do all the work on your own, you still need to pay a Dyno shop to tune it appropriately and remap the computer. That's a couple of grand right there. And we're just scratching the surface...

As people have said....sure it's doable...but you're gonna need one hella beastly car. The odds that some 19 y/o kid did all that? Pretty low.

Him not ACTUALLY going that fast....far more likely.

I totally agree with what you are saying, but, if you have a car that's capable of topping 200mph it's not going to run the 1/4 mile very well. You can have 1,500hp but if it's geared for drag racing you will just get to you limit really fast.

And that's the bottom line...I doubt this kid geared the car for top speed like that. It's why my buddy's gt500 couldn't do it. Lacked the gearing for it. But he tracks the car, not drag, so he has no need to gear for top end speed that he'll never hit on a track.

Even with a big ass shot of NOS the kid isn't hitting 208. Hell the hennessey guys built a stang for top end speed and only got it to 207.9

Im no aerodynamics wiz, but pretty sure at speeds like that down-force becomes a major player as well.

Agreed, I was using the 1/4 reference more to show that this is more than likely a stock 5.0 gt.

AND lets not forget tires. You'd need a "ZR" rated tire, which is essentially a racing tire ($$$$). Most high performance production tires are going to be "Z" or "W" rated tires which top out at around 168 mph. Kaboom goes the tires at a sustained speed that high....

Just far too many holes to make this story believable.

Indeed...so many holes. I'm sure one of the fine officers on this site could chime in, but apparently the stryker radar has a habit of calculating speed incorrectly in certain conditions. The mustang and the hypo were traveling in opposite directions. Initial speed clocked was 84, then 85 on the second. When the hypo turned around to go after him, thats when the clock speed went to 176 and then 208. Has to be a malfunction with the radar.

Oh and since I skipped it, 162 is the fastest I've hit. It was on a test drive of an 2011 M3. The salesman was the VP of the M3 club locally and he pressed me to test the car for all it's ability. Honestly, it was pretty effin' scary. I've driven at speed and tracked for a while now, but that was something different. Granted, I didn't own the car, so that probably played a part. Definitely will make your butt pucker a bit.
Currently am saving for a trip to Germany to drive the Nurburgring, but may just pay one of the BMW guys to drive me a lap too so I can experience the proper speed. Amazing what they do in the M5 with that throaty v10.
Same buddy that has that gt500 is trying to talk me into doing a drift school in cali. Not sure I really want to do it, but we shall see.

Let me put it this way:

We built a TWIN Supercharged 6.4L w/a 6-speed. The motor alone had over $40K in it....and that's before the forced induction components....

It topped out at 209 MPH on a DYNO...not even a street. That was at 20 PSI, 800ft lbs of Torque and 900HP.
